“Crown Princess, this is what Poppy just tried to bite!”

Ronowe held out toward me a gift the size of her own head.

“Come closer and take a look.”

“Alright.”

I crossed my arms and stepped nearer. When I cautiously brushed the surface with my fingertips, the texture didn’t feel entirely unfamiliar.

‘It’s strangely familiar. It resembles a conch shell. But I’ve never seen one this big. I think I once found something similar, only much smaller.’

Rummaging through old memories, I naturally accepted the gift from Ronowe, turned it this way and that, and suddenly recalled the short life I had lived in a small coastal village.

Unlike the perfect life of a crown princess where food, clothing, and shelter were all provided, back then I was the daughter of a poor couple who could barely put food on the table. Our circumstances were so dire that we couldn’t even afford medicine when someone fell ill; at the time I had thought everything was ruined and even gave up on finding an answer to God’s question.

I don’t remember exactly how old I was when I died, but the only thing that remains vividly clear is that, with my frail and dying body, I barely managed to gather enough strength for one walk along the beach. On the way home I picked up a few seashells and conches, lay in bed fiddling with them, and then pointlessly closed my eyes forever.

‘How strange. I still remember something like this.’

As expected, that was the first life in which I saw the sea, so it must have been branded into my mind.

I lack the literary talent to describe it properly, but the feeling of the ocean I experienced barefoot on the sand back then was special.

Of course it was—there had been no sea in the paradise where I lived my very first life, so it felt fresh.

Even though I had lived for hundreds of years, repeatedly dying and being reborn while trapped in the cycle of eternal life, I had never once come into contact with water. Simply living near the sea gave that life meaning.

Yet in the end it was merely one fragment of countless repeating lives; aside from the sea, there was nothing particularly different. Even the names and faces of the family I had lived with skin-to-skin in that life were now blurry—that says it all.
