People Aren't Meant to Be Fixed! (4 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 149
And the next morning.
I simply accepted it when another maidservant came to attend to me instead of Freyrie, and silently finished washing my face without comment.
After changing clothes as well, I made sure not to forget to encourage the maidservants, thanking them for their hard work. I wasn’t naturally accustomed to giving praise, and it felt awkward even as I did it—but given how Freyrie constantly found fault and complained about everything… I at least wanted to say something kind when she wasn’t around.
Though countless people longed to work at Bowellian Castle, if staff kept leaving too consistently, it would soon become my problem. So, I made a quiet effort to feign concern for my subordinates’ morale, even if no one else noticed.
“To receive praise from Your Highness leaves me unsure where to place myself.”
“I merely said what was well done was well done—nothing more.”
I patted the tearful maidservant’s shoulder and added in a flat tone, “Keep up the good work.” At that, she grew even more touched, her eyes brimming with tears as she bowed deeply and resolutely declared she would do exactly that.
Her expression was so serious I almost thought I was watching a swordswoman steeling herself for battle, ready to face death.
Having seen servants act just like that yet ultimately transfer to another estate due to Freyrie’s relentless torment, I couldn’t help wondering how long this maidservant would last.
“Good morning, Your Highness.”
“Yes.”
Anyway, once I finished preparing in my chambers and stepped outside, Carlisle approached from where he’d been waiting, offering a respectful bow and greeting me politely. He grew ever more dignified and dependable by the day—reminding me of Jeff in his twenties. If he kept this up, Carlisle would surely become a figure no less remarkable than Jeff himself. I felt proud.
“Quack! Quack, quack!”
“She’s thrilled to see you every day as if it’s your first meeting.”
I glanced sideways at Poppy, who was hopping excitedly in place, and looked back at Carlisle with my usual composed tone. Poppy had followed diligently behind us and, despite not yet having had breakfast, brimmed with energy.
