For a fleeting moment, I envisioned the future, shedding my guilt and feeling satisfied.

“It seems you’ve finally remembered why you were punished.”

Lilith spoke just as a gentle breeze blew, and I crossed my arms, looking up at her. She was annoyingly tall—still a runt even at ten years old, I felt my neck might snap just trying to meet her eyes. Standing and looking up was fine, or sitting on a high chair, but the problem was that all the chairs in the training yard had short legs.

So I couldn’t stare long; after briefly locking eyes as if giving her a sidelong glance, I quickly looked down again, closed my eyes, and shrugged my shoulders.

“No?”

I sighed and gazed at the nearby trees rustling softly. Sunlight, fine as grains of sand, scattered over the branches clattering gently against one another. Why was my gaze so captivated by the fresh greenery interwoven with shadows from higher branches?

Perhaps because it overlapped with the image of the World Tree in its time brimming with life?

“If that’s how it is, I’d have to be sick—seeing every tree in the empire as the World Tree. In terms of appearance alone, the World Tree is so much more magnificent than an ordinary tree!”

I thought such fragile reflections only came because my loved ones kept appearing, relentlessly shaking and dismantling the hardened shell I’d built around myself.

After all, if I hadn’t regained my ‘conscience,’ I never would’ve spent days staring blankly at the ceiling in such despair.

Neither would Freyrie, Carlisle, Ronowe, nor Beris have noticed my low spirits; I wouldn’t have suffered through Hecate and Jeff’s dreadful lullabies; nor would I have felt such shame, as though my hidden flaws had been exposed far too late.

Of course, it was pleasant to see familiar faces again—but that was all.

The remnants left behind by the World Tree and Yong Yong had cracked open a long-sealed box deep within my heart, dragging me helplessly into emotions I myself had long forgotten.

Just when I thought I’d finally escaped the tide of feelings I’d realized seven years ago during that treasure hunt, regaining my ‘conscience’ had brought all those buried memories rushing back at once, leaving me dizzy.
