People Aren't Meant to Be Fixed! (4 Chapters Left to Complete) - Chapter 116
“Oh, seriously!”
That useless idiot!
I felt an indescribable mix of emotions as I watched Freyrie pour ashes into an otherwise perfect soup. I had desperately tried to prevent Jeff from discovering the truth, crafting a plausible excuse to quickly send Freyrie back to Carlisle’s side and thus avoid an awkward situation.
Yet she beat me to it—truly impressive! Thanks to Freyrie acting utterly heartbroken and despondent in front of Jeff, there was no turning back. She’d blurted out what was meant to stay secret, like detonating a hidden bomb. All I could do was stand there, utterly stunned.
Worse still, just imagining what would unfold next filled me with dread. Jeff, who had momentarily staggered, now stood frozen with his mouth wide open.
I wanted to shut his gaping jaw for him, but the mood wasn’t right—I merely clenched and unclenched my fist.
“He looks utterly shocked. What should I do?”
In a few seconds, I feared Jeff would burst into loud sobs again. He’s such a doting father and clearly cares deeply for me; if I suddenly declared I was leaving home, he’d throw a fit.
Both Jeff and Hecate would likely blame themselves, wondering if they’d somehow failed me, inventing nonexistent faults and begging my forgiveness as though guilty of some grave sin.
If those two started wailing together, it would be even more dizzying than when they used to sing lullabies to me as a child.
“This isn’t the time for that.”
There was no choice. What’s done is done. I turned my stiff body to face Jeff. Though overwhelmed by an indescribable emptiness and despair, calming Jeff down was the urgent priority.
“Is that really true?”
Tears gathered at the corners of his eyes like large droplets. He glanced back and forth between me and Freyrie, then locked his gaze solely on me, wearing the expression of a man plunged into life’s greatest despair as he waited for my answer—and then he began sobbing again. Before I could respond, he pulled me into a tight embrace, crying bitterly, ignoring my attempts to calm him, and abruptly carried me out of the audience chamber.
“Darling!”
