The earth is an old world given by God to humans. Thus, in the world, ‘humans’ were the apex predators.

Nonhuman beings were classified into two categories.

Either subjugated or hunted.

So, if I was born as a beast, I would likely fall into the latter category.

“Meow.”

Every time I was frustrated, strange noises wouldn’t stop coming from my mouth.

‘But has there ever been a beast that cries like this?’

I silently remembered how when I was a beggar, a street cat cried like this.

‘Ah, was I born as a cat then?’

With those complex thoughts, I suddenly thought of Yurik.

A king who was a king, but did not see the successor.

A human who always wanted to give me the throne, on such a subject.

“Cough.”

And my friend who eventually left hopelessly sick in the end.

“You lit the fire?”

Yurik, who appeared lazy to me but was a wise king.

“You hate the darkness.”

“You remember this well.”

“Isn’t it obvious? It’s your job.”

Yurik’s end was truly quiet. If I recall, the vivid pupils under the flickering lamp linger in my memory.

“Are you dying?”

I was appalled by death, and you were indifferent. I didn’t like that.

“Everyone dies as a human.”

Unlike ordinary humans, you didn’t cry or wail, my king.

“I know. Who doesn’t know that?”

“You seem not to know.”

That day was Yurik’s last day. Coincidentally, it was a day I went into Yurik’s room secretly at night because I had a bad feeling.

Thinking about it, maybe it was my instinct as an immortal.

“You are about to die, and you laugh?”

Strange friend, really.

First of all, I will say that the reason I remember Yurik’s last day is not as sentimental as others think.

“Your last day can be happy too. The day you die could be today or tomorrow.”

I honestly didn’t care.

No, everything was annoying.

So even if I knew beforehand that that day was Yurik’s last, my feelings would not have changed.

A long life, perhaps there was no friend as close as Yurik.

“You know.”

Everything started from a word that popped out at the last moment of Yurik.

“You’ve been searching for your whole life, that ‘question’s answer.”

“Oh, I’m tired of it.”

I was sogged in life, like when I was stuck in a sewer.

‘Oh, I don’t want to live. I don’t want to live!’

May the damned God leave me alone in the pit, I was mumbling such childish nonsense.

“Me…… I think I finally understand.”

“Yeah. You know…… what?”

Who knew that Yurik’s words then would turn my hundreds of years of boredom upside down!

“Hey, you’re not talking nonsense now, are you? You’re not senile? Are you?”

“Does it seem that way?”

“No!”

Yurik was considered one of the wisest in that country. More than anything, there was no shake in his pupils at that moment, and it didn’t seem like he was lying.

For a long time, I didn’t have much, but my eyes for reading people were accurate.

“What is it? What is it?”

Am I finally ascending? Dying?

‘Heavens! My goodness! O Lord!’

I was thinking that the answer I had been looking for through reincarnation was in front of me. How could I not be anxious?

“Hey, you know I’m impatient. Hurry up and tell me!”

So I pestered my friend. Even at that moment, Yurik, this damned friend, smiled quietly.

“That’s the thing……”

It was a relationship that spanned two lifetimes. Such a coincidence was rare even in a long life, so it was special.

Yurik must have felt the same about me.

So she would have known how desperate I was all my life and how urgent.

Yet she played tricks on me, a mischievous friend.

‘I won’t leave you be if you play jokes.’

In my desperation, I swallowed my saliva and stared only at Yurik’s lips.

“God wants you to live……”

Then Yurik’s lips slowly opened.

“……huh?”

And that was it. Yurik fell into eternal sleep, about to say something. I trembled with anxiety as I looked at Yurik, who had stopped moving altogether.

My eyelids began to close involuntarily, and I felt as though my heart had stopped as well, looking at my friend who no longer showed even a slight movement.

“Hey…… huh? Hey? Yurik? Hey?”

Yurik, with her eyes closed, had no answer.
‘Is this a lie? Acting again? Is this a joke?’

I knew in my head that Yurik had finally found rest.

But unable to believe, I shook Yurik more violently, and my close friend’s hand fell lifelessly under the bed.

It was proof that it was already too late.

“……Hey! Crazy. Ah, damn it. How could you die like this!”

I clenched my long hair and trembled my hand.

“Hey! You damn. Even if you die, you should let me know! Hey! Hey!”

No matter how much I shook and coaxed, the dead had no answer.

“Hey, you bad……. I…… What am I supposed to do!”

With a desperate and faint echo, the moment closest to the answer to God’s question passed.

In fact, part of the reason I became king later and didn’t run away as Yurik’s will was this.

If I sat where Yurik had sat, maybe I would find the ‘answer.’

But it actually became useless.

[This is a time separator.]

I only realized a few days later that I was born as a human, not a dog or cat.
