Though I felt inclined to forgive the chieftain—who was willing to shoulder the tribe’s blame despite it not being his fault—his mother’s attitude made it impossible to feel any genuine goodwill.

Reminding myself that while the chieftain was pitiable, I shouldn’t indulge in excessive sympathy, I steeled my resolve.

“Chieftain, thank you. I’ll help however I can.”

“Yes. Thank you.”

Unlike my cold reply to his mother, I spoke gently to the chieftain. The grumbling behind me seemed to grow even louder.
