I rummaged through my pocket and pulled out the guardian tree I’d made over time. For easy carrying, I’d drilled a hole at the very top and tied a string through it.

“The Lamie tribe has a tradition of crafting a guardian tree as a gift for one’s lover or spouse. And since Cynthia was the fruit my mother loved most, they say she gave it to the person she liked best as a confession.”

Looking into those eyes made my throat tighten with nervousness.
