The place where 9-year-old Eun Jo first met him was “Sunflower Hill.”

It was a clean and warm place under the care of Head Nun Sister Marta, yet it was filled with sadness.

Though the sunflowers—tall, just like the hill’s name—loomed large and yellow beneath the summer sun, blocking out the sky,

the days of children abandoned by their parents were never dazzling.

Whether they cried, played mischievous pranks, or showed an indifference unbecoming of a child, their reactions might differ based on their natural temperament or disposition.

But deep down, every soul was sorrowful and wounded.

Eun Jo, too, waited for her mother. She clung to the windowsill overlooking the front gate, crying endlessly.

[Don’t wait.]

The boy, who had stood silently beside her for days, finally spoke.

He watched the glass-like tears streaming from her wide, blinking eyes, then pulled his hands out of his pockets.

[Then I’ll give you this.]

It was a lollipop—plump and colorful, completely unlike the plain candies Sister Marta usually gave. Swirls of bright, vivid colors spiraled toward its center.

It was pretty, and she wanted it—enough to momentarily forget about her mother.

Eun Jo quickly wiped her tears and reached out her small hand.

But the boy pulled the lollipop back toward himself and said,
