Klaud strode swiftly towards the console attached to the wall and took out some medicine from the drawer, chewing and swallowing it.

Cracking his neck a couple of times, he leaned on his trembling hand as if the medicine itself was a person, and then fiercely glared at Yooan.

“Just because my body is crushed doesn’t mean I am an idiot.”

His bloodshot eyes pierced through her as if questioning her sanity for wanting their wedding night despite his wretched state. His torn lips revealed his white teeth.

A laugh like that of a mad person emerged due to the unbearable pain. She knew this all too well.

“Try it.”

The man, embodying the black mansion scorched by fire, laughed longer and more painfully, suppressing his agony. He looked like a fallen angel in the distance.

Yooan stopped her momentary daze and placed the candlestick she was holding on a nearby table.

“Keep going. Whatever you can do.”

She squared her shoulders and carefully approached him.

His dark brown skin was rigidly entwined, showing his face and clenched jaw enduring the pain intermittently.

‘I can heal this.’

It was pure agony. Not a disease, but visible agony rising to the surface.

She remembered reading about similar symptoms somewhere.

As Klaud laughed mockingly at her examining his skin like a dermatologist, she asked.

“What are you doing? Should I undress you first?”

“Please, undress.”

“What?”

It was time to check if that horrific thing had spread all over his body.

Yooan, who was scanning his skin through the loosely open nightgown, mustered her courage.

“…Please undress.”

Klaud looked down at her with a face overwhelmed by suppressed shame.

The Emperor, frozen for a while, started to laugh, shaking his shoulders. He laughed heartily, then abruptly lifted his head and threw off his nightgown, already half-undone.

As his body, blackened by pain, was exposed, he stepped towards Yooan. Seeing that she did not move away, he slightly raised an eyebrow.

With the same subtly flickering eyes she had seen in the carriage, he remarked.

“You’re holding up pretty well, aren’t you?”

Yooan just stared at him without a word.

His pain-distorted eyes sparkled with newfound amusement.

“What else? Should I do more? Should I help you?”

Yooan bypassed him and approached the console strewn with medicine bags. A crystal glass, seemingly drunk in a bid to forget the pain, was carelessly placed, half-filled with amber liquor.

Yooan grasped it and suddenly extended it towards the Emperor.

Trembling severely, she presented the glass.

“Drink this.”

The Emperor, amused, came closer and took the glass.

“Fine. Try to kill me.”

His face was convinced Yooan had poisoned the drink. Yet, he did not throw the glass or spill the liquor but stared straight into her eyes and brought the glass to his lips.

“This poison won’t kill me…”

As soon as he drank, pain seemed to hit him, and Klaud groaned and sneered simultaneously.

Yooan cautiously approached and extended her hand.

For a moment, he flinched and retreated as if to refuse, but Yooan reached further and wiped his lips, absorbing a bit of his pain.

Following the path of her fingers, slightly whiter and smoother skin was revealed beneath the droplets.

Yooan stared blankly at his face, now free of pain.

His once bloodshot eyes, tortured with agony, regained their original color, revealing a dazzlingly beautiful, purplish hue.
For a fleeting moment, Yooan had locked eyes with the most sane version of Klaud Upris.

“This is…”

Klaud had noticed the change as well. The pain in his head had been briefly absorbed, leaving his mind clear as if he had splashed cold water on his face.

His eyes, previously maddened and gleaming, now stared at Yooan ghostly, wide and round.

Soon after, his large frame leaned forward unsteadily. It was the same reaction that those who had received secret treatments from him over the past ten years had shown.

When Yooan absorbed pain, the subjects would lose consciousness or fall asleep briefly instead. This was also why she had managed to keep her method of healing hidden for so long.

Yooan quickly caught the unconscious Klaud and, with great effort, dragged him to a secluded bed and laid him down. Then she let out the moans she had been suppressing.

“Ugh!”

It was a pain like her brain was being twisted and pulled. A headache that struck like shallow lightning.

Her entire face felt burning hot, as if her skin was being abraded off, and she was overwhelmed with pain.

Gasping for breath, Yooan buried her face in the bed covers next to Klaud. Only after a long bout of sobbing did the pain gradually subside.

To think that experiencing just a fraction of his agony could be this excruciating…

Sweaty, Yooan looked down at the sleeping Klaud.

Under the moonlight seeping through the curtains, he lay there peacefully, like a delicately crafted jewel, breathtakingly beautiful.

The infectious, black energy of pain started to creep up from his neck again, but for tonight at least, he would be at peace.

When scheming men desperately battle for her favor in the male harem

This one’s also on my reread list! The rivalry, scheming between the men in the imperial harem are just as intense and thrilling as in classic palace drama novels, where concubines fight to the death. Give it a read, girls! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Synopsis:

“I am not worthy of her… but I still want to be by her side, even if only as a loyal dog…”

Those were the painful whispers of Yue Guanyi – the proud Crown Prince of the Great Qi, who was torn between deep love and a guilty conscience. Despite holding the supreme power of the Imperial Guard, he still could not forget the dark past when he was sold into a brothel.

Fate played a cruel twist when Qiu Shuzhi – a young female official who had just passed the imperial examinations with top honors – stepped into his life. She did not know that she was the one who had saved him from a tragic fate many years ago. And now, her heart was the target of pursuit for both Yue Guanyi and the powerful Empress Dowager Qin Qing.

While Yue Guanyi only dared to silently care for and protect the one he loved from afar, the  Empress Dowager Qin Qing openly expressed his feelings and did not hesitate to take advantage of his power to approach Qiu Shuzhi. The covert struggle between the two most powerful forces in the imperial court began…
