Yooan faced the butler’s gaze calmly.

Surprised by her steadfastness, Butler Gustaf inadvertently let out a chuckle, which he quickly masked, then shook his head.

“It’s unlikely, but technically, yes.”

He bowed and left. Although his response was cold, Yooan felt as if she had seen a glimmer of hope.

‘It’s not enough just to keep working and endure.’

She didn’t want to return to the Pellesse household. Nor was she confident enough to run away empty-handed and not be caught. Her uncle would never let her go. If she fled from the Duke, her uncle wouldn’t miss the opportunity. He was the kind of man who would find her, declare her missing, and then confine her in a room next to the Pellesse laboratory.

The thought alone was terrifying.

Thinking about it, having an indifferent husband wasn’t all bad. At least, it meant he wasn’t the ‘lecherous’ man rumored to be.

If she could just close her eyes and consummate the marriage, maybe Yooan could live somewhat peacefully in a secluded room of this otherwise deserted mansion.

As Yooan’s already official wife, it would not be easy for Claude to simply dismiss her if she ever subtly inquired about his former wives.

“Mistress! Let’s prepare for the consummation!”

Hena, who had been watching quietly, silently cheered and clasped her hands together in prayer.

“Now that there’s a mistress in the house, it’s time. I hope you consummate the marriage, and even if the master wants to, he can’t send you away! What luck! This must be divine help. For the royal family to issue such a command all of a sudden!”

With an excited face, Hena immediately sat Yooan in front of the dressing table and began to comb her hair earnestly. After making her look healthy with makeup, she even brought out a slip dress suitable for a new bride to help her dress.

Yooan, feeling surreal as the maids tended to her, started to feel anxious as the sun set.

‘Will he come?’

It’s a request from the royal family, after all. Wouldn’t he at least pretend to comply?

Butler Gustaf, despite recently softening due to Yooan’s assertiveness, was fundamentally a man of principle.

Surely, he would have conveyed the royal request for consummation to his master.

But contrary to Yooan’s hopes, as dusk fell and evening began, Claude Upris, with his faded golden hair, did not show up.

“It’s not just today, Mistress. Don’t worry too much. You’re still not fully recovered, right? Maybe the master is subtly considering your condition.”

Hena, who had been eagerly awaiting any message from Claude, tried to sound cheerful as she tidied the bed.

Yooan watched her busy hands, feeling increasingly out of place in her unfamiliar attire.

Maybe Claude had known all along.

The royal pressure to consummate, her position waiting for her husband.

He could dismiss her anytime, citing the lack of consummation as an excuse.

She had hoped that by adapting to life here, she wouldn’t be easily dismissed, but he had his certainty.

Family ties without a drop of shared blood could be severed so easily.

‘What if I’m sent away like this?’

If she couldn’t stay in the mansion, a peaceful life, inquiring about Louise’s death, even giving Louise a proper funeral, would all be in vain.

After the maids changed the canopy over the bed to gold and lit scented candles, they left. Yooan watched them close the door and then asked Hena, who had just finished arranging the bed, a question she had wanted to ask ever since she arrived.
“Hena, by any chance, can I see Louise’s room, the previous wife?”

Hena’s chattering voice stopped abruptly. A fleeting silence swept through the room, then Hena straightened up and bowed her head.

“I’m sorry.”

Asking about Louise always led to this reaction. Not just from Hena, but from all the servants in the mansion.

There was an unspoken rule to remain silent about the previous wives.

“I’ve prepared the bridal chamber, so I think that’s enough for now. I’ll be leaving then, Mistress.”

Rushed by the thought that she might soon be sent away, Yooan hastily made a mistake.

Watching Hena hurriedly trying to leave, Yooan replied sadly, “Sleep well, Hena.”

Hena, gathering miscellaneous items to leave, saw Yooan’s dejected look.

Yooan forced a faint smile.

The young maid opened the bedroom door, hesitated for a long moment, then rolled her big eyes down.

“The guest rooms in the main house are mostly on the 3rd and 2nd floors.”

“!”

“Just… thought you should know.”

Hena quickly closed the door and left. Yooan stared at the spot where Hena had been for a while before getting up abruptly.

The 3rd floor corridor was dead silent. The mansion was vast, but there were few servants, the guards only patrolled the outside, and everyone retreated to their quarters at night.

Compared to the Pellesse mansion, where maids took turns patrolling, the silence here was profound.

For Yooan, it was a good thing.

However, the problem was…

“Please…”

No matter how many doors she opened and closed, there was no trace of anyone inside. Most rooms were either unfurnished or locked.
