“What did you just say, Mother?”

Chae Ha’s thick eyebrows twitched with fierce anger as he turned toward his mother, Heo Young Joo.

Seizing the moment she’d clearly been waiting for, she planted both hands on her hips and scolded him in a lecturing tone.

“I said we should hold a funeral.”

“Ha.”

A hollow sigh, laced with anger, escaped his lips—

as if he’d just heard something utterly absurd.

“A funeral? Who died?”

“It’s already been a whole week!”

“Yes. Just barely a week.”

“We’ve already done everything you wanted—we even deployed divers to search. We combed every nearby island and shoreline. What more do you expect us to do? It’s time to give up. No matter how much we search, we won’t find the body…”

“Mother.”

His voice rang out with such lethal intensity that it sounded almost threatening in Heo Young Joo’s ears.

Still speaking in a low tone, yet with a voice that seemed ready to drag her straight to hell if she uttered another word, he rasped bitterly.

“Choose your words carefully. Min Seol Won—my wife—is not dead.”

At those words, Heo Young Joo finally let her simmering frustration burst out.

She’d held back for the past few days at her husband’s urging, but now her patience had clearly run out.

Was the entire household really walking on eggshells over some utterly insignificant woman?

“Kwon Chae Ha! Are you saying we should just leave her in limbo forever? I can’t stand this lingering uncertainty! It’s only proper to hold a proper funeral—for the sake of the departed. You have to let the dead go.”

A sneer curled at the corner of Chae Ha’s lips.

“How odd. I never realized you cared so deeply about my wife. Anyone hearing this might think you’re planning to throw her a grand party.”

“…”

“And…”

A chilling glint flashed in Chae Ha’s eyes before he took a sharp step toward his mother.

Intimidated by his presence, Heo Young Joo instinctively took a step back—only for Chae Ha to deliver his final, icy blow.

“I find it curious. You’re the one who wouldn’t even let us hold a proper wedding, yet you’re so insistent on holding a funeral. You couldn’t even bring yourself to acknowledge my marriage—but now you’re eager to announce my wife’s death to the whole world?”

Heo Young Joo flinched, her eyes twitching.

But she couldn’t let this rare chance—after days of being silenced—slip away.

“The dead are gone, but the living must go on! Shouldn’t you think about your own future?”

“Hmm. My ‘future’? That seems rather inappropriate to consider just a week after my wife disappeared.”

At Chae Ha’s words, Heo Young Joo finally snapped and raised her voice.

“You’ll have to start fresh someday! Are you really going to cling to a dead wife for the rest of your life? Listen carefully, Kwon Chae Ha—Min Seol Won is dead! The police confirmed she fell off the breakwater and was swept away by the waves…”

“Mother.”

Her mouth snapped shut at the bone-chilling sound of his voice.

Clutching his jaw so tightly it nearly drew blood, Chae Ha whispered in a voice colder than winter.

“If you say she’s dead even once more, I don’t know what I might do.”

Heo Young Joo instinctively understood he wasn’t bluffing; she could only blink helplessly, eyes pitiful.

Leaving his mother behind, Chae Ha stormed upstairs with heavy, furious steps.

He’d always known how obsessively fixated she was on marriage—but to already be talking about remarriage before Seol Won’s place in their home had even grown cold truly took his breath away.

“…Ha.”

By the time he reached the top of the stairs, his anger had turned inward.

Who was he to blame anyone else?

Hadn’t he been the one who put Seol Won in that position?

Chae Ha had never known regret in his entire life.

He’d always made rational, calculated decisions, never leaving room for second thoughts.

But in this moment, the greatest regret of his life surged over him like a violent storm, overwhelming and inescapable.

“Ha… hahahaha.”

Laughing like a madman, Chae Ha clutched his chest in agony.

If only he’d never met her—Min Seol Won would still be alive.

If only he hadn’t proposed that damned contract marriage.

Kwon Chae Ha—if only I hadn’t chosen her.

Three years ago,

Ever since Kwon Tae Ha, the eldest son of the Chae Woon Group and Chae Ha’s older brother, died, Heo Young Joo’s hysteria had only worsened.

She now pressured her second son relentlessly to fulfill the ambitions she’d once pinned on her firstborn.

And that ambition was a “marriage”—to a daughter from an equally prestigious family.

Heo Young Joo had long set her sights on daughters from families rivaling the Chae Woon Group as brides for her sons. Among them was Baek Sa Ra, the youngest daughter of the Baek Young Group.

But when Tae Ha died suddenly, she began hammering Baek Sa Ra’s name into Chae Ha’s ears like a constant mantra.

No matter how often he insisted he had no desire to marry, she remained utterly unreasonable.

Using her eldest son’s death as emotional leverage, she pleaded with tears—leaving Chae Ha no choice but to fulfill his filial duty.

But this went on for so long that her obsession gradually wore him down.

Even on the day he’d reluctantly attended an unwanted wedding only to return home, Heo Young Joo had immediately cornered him again.

“I’ve arranged a meeting with the Baek Young elders next week. Keep your schedule clear.”

“Mother, I’ve already told you clearly—I don’t want to.”

“That Sa Ra—such a sweet, gentle girl. You can really tell she was raised well in a fine family. She’s already calling me ‘Mother’ so affectionately—it’s truly lovely.”

Unsurprisingly, she had no intention of listening to her son’s wishes.

Chae Ha sighed, shook his head, and turned toward his room.

But her declaration shot after him like an arrow, striking his back.

“You’ll attend—what reason could you possibly have to refuse the best match imaginable, especially when you don’t even have someone else in mind? I’m doing all this for your sake, Chae Ha!”

He nearly snapped back with, “Then why don’t you marry her yourself?”—but he knew it would only trigger another episode: her collapsing to the floor, sobbing for hours while wailing his brother’s name.

He’d obeyed his mother meekly his whole life—yet in the end, he’d disappointed her endlessly.

And so had his brother, Tae Ha, who’d lost everything before his death.

Ever since Tae Ha’s passing, Chae Ha had barely slept a full night.

Though not particularly affectionate toward his family, the sudden loss of his blood relative had left a deep wound within him.

Too exhausted to sleep, he tossed and turned repeatedly that night, thinking of his hopelessly stubborn older brother.

“What a fool.”

Finally, Chae Ha clenched the blanket so hard his knuckles turned white.

Simultaneously, an indescribable surge of defiance rose against his mother, who’d remained unchanged even after losing her eldest son.

He’d never shown interest in women before—which he knew only encouraged Heo Young Joo to push harder.

But Chae Ha had absolutely no intention of marrying Baek Sa Ra.

He wanted nothing to do with a woman so flashy and hollow underneath.

If he absolutely had to marry someone, he’d choose the exact opposite of what his mother desired:

a woman with no background, no riches, nothing.

And if he needed a fake partner to pull it off, he could certainly find one—even if she wasn’t the real deal.

“A fake…”

As he murmured the word, a woman suddenly flashed across Chae Ha’s mind.

The strange, intriguing woman he’d met at the wedding today.

She was utterly different from any woman he’d ever encountered.

Why? He knew nothing about her—not even her name, really—and yet she kept coming to mind.

Chae Ha rose from his bed and immediately dug deep into the jacket pocket he’d hung up earlier.

From inside, he pulled out the business card he’d received just hours ago.

Though it was a plain shop card with no name printed on it, three clear characters shimmered before his eyes on the white paper.

Min Seol Won—her name.

He hadn’t come to collect payment for the flowers—that wasn’t his intention at all.

He simply wanted to look once more into those determined eyes that had stared so firmly into his.

The next day, Chae Ha’s black sedan slid smoothly to a halt in front of a building.

[ Laura Ann James Flowers ]

Without hesitation, he stepped into the glass-walled structure, which resembled a grand greenhouse.

“Excuse me.”

“Yes, welcome! How can I help you?”

A man who’d been arranging flowers inside turned with a friendly smile.

He was a middle-aged mixed-race man with distinctive pale forsythia-colored facial hair—

likely James, the shop owner.

But before Chae Ha could state his purpose, the man approached him cheerfully, as if recognizing him.

“Could you possibly be the gentleman who helped our Seol Won yesterday?”

“Me?”

“Seol Won mentioned she was assisted by a tall, handsome man and asked me to give you this if you came by.”

He handed over an envelope with a bright smile.

Seol Won had called him “tall and handsome”? That didn’t quite sound like something she’d say.

Chae Ha accepted the envelope with bewildered hands—only for the man’s cheerful expression to darken quickly.

“I’m sorry, sir. Actually… I opened the envelope because I was worried something might be wrong.”

“I see.”

“Yes. And… there’s quite a significant amount of money inside. So, if it’s not too rude to ask—could this be related to why Seol Won quit?”

“…What? Did you say Min Seol Won quit?”

Taken aback, Chae Ha asked again, and James nodded somberly.

“Yes. She submitted her resignation letter yesterday.”

“A resignation letter…”

“She was truly rare talent—I’m deeply disappointed. Even though she never formally studied floristry, her instincts were extraordinary. My wife Laura praised her so highly that I hired her specially. It’s a real loss.”

James glanced cautiously at Chae Ha before continuing.

“That’s actually why I’m so concerned. Given Seol Won’s circumstances, it wouldn’t have been easy for her to gather that kind of money—and now she suddenly quit, too.”

Her circumstances weren’t good, he’d said…

Instead of answering, Chae Ha silently mulled over those words.

“May I ask—what’s your relationship with Seol Won? And if it’s not too intrusive, could you tell me why she gave you this money? If it’s the shop’s fault in any way, I’ll gladly compensate you myself.”

Chae Ha opened the envelope with indifferent fingers.

Sure enough, it contained an amount substantial enough to justify James’s concern.

He’d generously delivered the lily of the valley—but this sum far exceeded what was necessary.

“I have no relationship with Min Seol Won. We merely crossed paths once yesterday—at the wedding. I was attending as a guest.”

“…I see.”

At Chae Ha’s sharp, definitive reply, James set down the pruning shears he’d been holding and sighed.

Clearly, he had no idea what Seol Won had endured yesterday.

Her claim that she wouldn’t “tattle about every little detail” hadn’t been an empty phrase after all.

Despite everything, she’d kept quiet—quite a discreet woman.

Chae Ha pushed the envelope back toward James.

“In any case, I don’t need this. I didn’t come here for payment.”

“No, I was entrusted with this—I must give it to you. If you want to return it, you should give it back to Seol Won yourself.”

Indeed, this wasn’t something to hand off to a third party.

In the end, Chae Ha accepted both the envelope and Seol Won’s address from James.

More than the money, he genuinely wanted to have a serious conversation with her.

Perhaps Min Seol Won was exactly the woman he needed right now.

He needed to find out for sure.
