In an instant, Seolwon’s heart sank.
Without even thinking of calling a nurse, she tightened her grip on Uju’s small hand.
Gradually, tears welled up in Uju’s eyes.
Once again, Uju sobbed with a tearful voice.
“Dad…”
“Uju…”
Surprisingly, Uju was calling Chaeha “dad.”
It wasn’t a confusion with the usual “Great King Dad,” nor was it an unconscious utterance.
In the affectionate gaze directed at Chaeha, his eyes were filled with worry for his dad.
Regardless of what had happened, Uju now knew for sure that Chaeha was his real dad.

Seolwon patted Uju’s hand without saying a word.
Whether it was due to the touch or not, Uju closed his heavy eyelids with a swish.
Still, he woke up much faster than expected, thank goodness.
Seeing the two lying together in the hospital bed, her heart was racing faster than she thought.
To announce that the child had awakened, Seolwon stood up and reached out to the bell at the head of the bed.
From below the arm, Uju’s murmuring voice was faintly heard.
“Dad… Dad came to save Uju.”
In an instant, overcome with emotion, Seolwon’s slender body swayed.
Although she already knew from Jaeyoon, hearing the fact from the child’s mouth made her throat tighten again.
To willingly jump into that fire, which I couldn’t rush into, Chaeha, regardless of how he was called, was already Uju’s one and only dad.

Several days had passed since Chaeha lost consciousness.
Seolwon and Uju, who were discharged first, were staying at home together.
Actually, she wanted to be by Chaeha’s side all the time, but it seemed not to be good for Uju.
Seeing the unconscious Chaeha made her sad, and she didn’t want to make the surprised child even sadder.
For now, Uju’s recovery was a priority.
After returning home, Uju was taking a break from kindergarten to focus on recovery.
Although he tried his best not to show any signs of anxiety, Seolwon’s mood couldn’t be hidden from the child.
“Mom~ Aren’t you eating?”
“Huh?”
Only then did Seolwon realize that she was lost in thought with a fork in her hand.

Uju’s rice bowl was still half full.
Seeing that, Seolwon sighed softly.
“Sorry, Uju. Mom was just… Well, let’s eat well, Uju?”
“Yeah…”
With drooping eyes, Uju mumbled his lips.
“Uju, is there anything you want to say to Mom?”
As if waiting for it, Uju lifted his head again and stared at Seolwon intently.
Then, very cautiously, he asked.
“Is Great King Dad… Uju’s dad?”
“…”

For the past few days, he must have been very curious.
Uju, a filial son who knew how to check his mom’s mood even at a young age, had swallowed this question several times, and now he finally asked it.
Gracious yet sharp, Seolwon set down her utensils and gently stroked Uju’s soft hair with her hands.
“Sorry, Uju. Mom and Dad were planning to tell Uju soon, but…”
Uju’s constantly sulky expression finally brightened up.
“Really, Great King Dad is Uju’s dad? Yes?”
“Yeah. That’s right. Uju’s dad.”
Even though her face was filled with pure joy, Seolwon’s voice softened with the guilt of hiding things for so long.
She had expected Uju to be happy, but considering the circumstances, she was also worried about his reaction.
Curious, Seolwon asked Uju how he knew.
“Yeah~ Mom told me a long time ago. Mom’s dad also saved someone from a fire~.”

“Ah, that’s right.”
“When we were swinging together in the beautiful field, Uju asked. If Uju was in danger, would Dad come to save him? Dad said he would definitely come because he’s Dad. But Dad really came to save Uju. That’s what Dad told Uju~.”
“…I see.”
In a natural and yet heartbreakingly beautiful way, Uju had learned the truth.
When was it?
She recalled the day when the three of them were leaving Chaeha’s company, and a large firetruck passed by on the road.
They had briefly talked about fathers at that time, never expecting that such an incident would occur.
“Mom, when will Dad wake up?”
Checking Seolwon’s reaction, Uju asked the question with a worried expression.
Even though lying was always considered wrong, a white lie was sometimes necessary.

Seolwon smiled brightly, pouring a small amount of the broth from Uju’s bowl onto his little lips.
“He’ll wake up soon. If our Uju eats well and waits. Now, ah~.”
“Yeah~ Uju will eat well!”
With a cheerful expression, Uju eagerly ate his food.
Looking at his cute, chubby cheeks, Seolwon silently prayed.
Please wake up soon and see the adorable figure of your son.
Leaving Uju on the bed where he used to sleep with Chaeha, Seolwon quietly closed the door.
The late-night air was cool, and she couldn’t help but shiver.
It was strange.
The house used to be a place where she could be alone without Chaeha.

But now, the absence of him in the house felt awkward and unbearable.
“Sigh…”
The suppressed sigh dispersed into the chilly night air.
Tonight, it seemed impossible to fall asleep, so Seolwon walked downstairs.
She intentionally left all the lights on throughout the house.
The dining room decorated like the sea for Uju, and the scattered toys in the living room…
When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!
The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
