Of all times, not a single person was passing by the reserved parking spot. He seemed determined not to back down until he got an answer.

There was nothing she could do. Even if she ran away from here, what more could she say besides lies?

She didn’t want to do it. He wasn’t someone who didn’t understand her parents’ situation, and from the start, she never wanted even a seed of doubt to take root between them.

Hae Jin pulled out a tear-stained piece of paper from her bag. The note in her hand was passed to Tae Hong.

Tae Hong’s brow furrowed tightly. She couldn’t tell whether it was because of the smudged writing or the tear-blotted paper.

“My parents came early this morning.”

His eyes, which had been fixed on the blurred characters, snapped instantly to Hae Jin. Now, he focused intently on her lips.

“Did you see them?”

Her silent head shook left and right. Hae Jin slowly lowered her gaze. She remembered again the weight of the side dish container hanging on the front door.

How must her parents have felt, unable even to ring the doorbell, leaving only the container behind?

The realization of their feelings only now hit her, blurring her vision.

“They left just the note and the side dish container.”

She swallowed her tears, but couldn’t hide the dampness in her voice. His hand gently lifted her bowed head.

Through her hazy vision, she saw his face. She dared not move—afraid that even a single blink might cause her tears to spill over.

What expression was he wearing? She was almost relieved it looked distant and unreadable. She didn’t want to pass her emotions on to him, too.
