Meiana let out a dry laugh.

“It’s no wonder Her Ladyship lost a tooth.”

“It was so much fun! Brigitte spread some strange sauce between my bread—it was tangy at first, then salty, and finally sweet.”

What on earth kind of sauce was that…? Meiana glanced sideways at Brigitte, but she shook her head solemnly.

“No matter how you look at me, I can’t tell you, Meiana. That sauce is a magical recipe passed down only among the women of our family… I swore to my grandmother I’d never reveal it.”

Am I some kind of industrial spy? Meiana thought.

Just then, Ibi appeared, having washed herself roughly and changed into fresh clothes as Meiana had instructed. Beinti whipped her head around, looking as if she wanted to scold Ibi for the thick braids hanging heavily on either side of her head.

Ariante, too, stared wide-eyed at Ibi. She seemed as tense as a rabbit that had just been spotted by a fox at the entrance of its burrow.

“Who are you?”

Ariante spoke. Though her question was directed at Meiana, Ibi unexpectedly answered before Meiana could.

“Hello, my lady. My name is Ibi. I’m nineteen years old, and from now on, I’ll be your maid.”

Meiana took Ariante’s hand and said,

“She’s the new maid who arrived in the east wing today. She says this is her first time working in a place like this, my lady. You’ll treat her kindly, won’t you?”

Ariante tilted her head curiously and walked toward Ibi, leaves still tangled in her hair… Then, as if admiring a statue, she slowly circled once around Ibi. Ibi watched Ariante spin around her without blinking.

“You’ll lose your balance and fall over like that.”
