Meiana could quickly guess the hidden intention behind Luke’s words.

Not that she was bragging, but before coming to the capital, she had been quite popular in her hometown. Several men had asked her out on dates, and on feast days or whenever the village held small festivals, there were always a few who shyly approached her, hoping to be her dance partner. Though she herself had never been particularly interested…

Meiana set down her teacup and gave a faint smile.

“I’d be happy to, but as I mentioned earlier, I don’t know when I’ll get another chance to rest.”

Luke said,

“That’s all right. If… if you ever manage to take leave, please send me a letter. Um, you see… I take turns resting, so I could always swap days off with a colleague.”

After saying this, he began rummaging through his pockets. Wondering what he was up to, Meiana rested her chin in her hand and watched him intently. From his back pocket, Luke pulled out a short pencil.

Amused, Meiana asked,

“Do you always carry a pencil with you?”

He quietly fiddled with his reddening ears and began scribbling something onto a rough paper napkin.

“It’s a habit. When I help with postal duties… I end up writing all sorts of things. Here, please send your letter to this address. Mail goes to His Grace the Duke’s estate nearly every day… just give it separately to the gatekeeper, and I’ll receive it.”

Meiana took the napkin Luke offered her. Though it looked hastily written, the handwriting was strong and clear. She hesitated for a moment, fiddling with the napkin, then neatly folded it by aligning the corners and tucked it into her bag.

“Alright. If I feel like taking another walk, I’ll send you a letter.”

But Meiana vaguely knew she would never actually send him one. Luke was certainly kind and a good person—but he hadn’t asked for her letter because he wanted to become walking companions with her.

And Meiana couldn’t give Luke what he wanted. After all, she intended to keep her promise to Ariante.
