As noon approached, Ariante kept tugging at Meiana’s hand, complaining that she was hungry.

Near the village square, there were many street vendors selling snacks. Ariante couldn’t take her eyes off freshly fried bread or baked potatoes drizzled with honey sauce. Though she’d never seen these foods before, her expression clearly showed she couldn’t bear not eating them.

“Meiana, that one! What’s that? I mean that one!”

Meiana looked toward the wheeled stall Ariante was pointing at. It looked less like a stall and more like a cart fitted with a canopy, selling stick candies coated in syrup made from melted brown sugar.

Children handed coins to the vendor and then lingered in front of the cart for a long while, each trying to pick the longest candy they could get.

“It’s a candy coated in sugar syrup, Your Highness.”

“Can’t I have that?”

“Let’s have our proper meal first. I’ll buy you that as a snack afterward.”

“But I really want that! Why can’t I just have it for lunch?”

“Only grown-ups are allowed to eat just candy for lunch.”

At Meiana’s calm reply, Ariante’s eyes widened as if she’d just heard the most unjust statement in the world, and her mouth dropped open.

“Where’s that fair? Why are grown-ups allowed to eat only candy for lunch?”

“Well, grown-ups don’t have other grown-ups scolding them, do they? But little children like Your Highness do have someone to scold them—and right now, that someone is me. So you can’t have just candy for lunch. But once you finish your proper meal, I’ll buy you any snack you’d like.”

Ariante kicked the ground sharply with her toe.

“That’s unfair! When I grow up, I’ll eat only candy too.”
