That someone was none other than Meiana. The head chef, who had been glaring at her with a stern expression, sighed and stirred the soup.

“It’s the same meal as the Duke’s. Isn’t that only natural?”

Meiana said.

“Please serve the sea bass wrapped in eggplant as it is. However, could you use a different sauce instead of the soybean sauce? Something slightly sweet would be nice.”

“Hey, who do you think you are…!”

The kitchen grew even colder under the head chef’s fierce glare, his arm swinging violently as if ready to hurl the ladle he held. Yet Meiana stood her ground with arms crossed, clearly unwilling to budge an inch until her request was granted.

Setting the ladle down, the head chef rolled up his sleeves and snapped,

“How long will you keep coddling her like this? Huh? My own children—if they were picky eaters, I starved them! Go hungry for a few days, and see if you still dare say you don’t want to eat!”

“I don’t think you need to tell me just how inhumanely you raised your children. But please don’t be too heartbroken if none of them care for you after you retire.”

“What—what did you say?”

“And do you really think I’d just stand by and let the young lady eat only what she likes? She’s still young and rather particular, so we’ll gradually adjust. You needn’t worry—I’ll handle that part myself. So please change the sauce for the young lady’s dish—use something other than soybean sauce. She loves figs; if you add some to her salad, she’ll eat well.”

Just then, as if echoing the chef’s inner turmoil, the soup bubbled furiously. He hastily pulled away some firewood to lower the flame and exhaled an angry breath through tightly clenched teeth.

“Fine, fine! I’ll do as you say—now get out of my kitchen at once.”

“Thank you, Chef.”

Meiana bowed with almost irritating politeness and left the kitchen without another word. Watching her retreating back, the chef felt his anger surge even higher—but instinctively realized it was best to comply with Meiana’s demands.
