No Evil Lady in the World (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 4
Meiana could not easily hide her startled expression. Though she quickly composed herself, not everything could be concealed.
It was not entirely unheard of for nobles and commoners to fall in love, but the outcomes were rarely favorable.
They often faced fierce opposition from their families, leading to separation, or even if they fled to distant lands, they became the subject of gossip and rumors for a long time.
Even if, by some stroke of luck, they were accepted by the family, fitting into the exclusive social circles of the nobility was no easy task.
Meiana thought to herself.
‘Whether man or woman, if their status was that of a commoner, even a formal marriage would likely lead to being treated as a mistress… Did Lady Celine not know this? In any case, I understand why someone as grand as Duke Valterminster would come to a place like this. But…’
At that moment, the duke’s sudden words abruptly interrupted Meiana’s thoughts.
“Madam, when I leave, I’d like to take this young lady with me. Is that alright with you?”
Celine turned her clouded eyes toward Meiana’s direction.
“You’re saying you’ll take the young lady with you, Duke?”
She seemed utterly surprised, and for some reason, she also appeared uneasy. Was it because of the rain, or something else?
The duke said.
“Yes. Since she mentioned needing a job, I’m considering hiring her. One of my maids recently left, and I was about to recruit someone new. If she has experience, she should adapt easily.”
Lady Celine’s wrinkled lips twitched in surprise. But it didn’t last long. As if it were her own good fortune, she gave a warm smile and patted Meiana’s knee encouragingly.
“That’s truly fortunate. It’s a good thing. With my eyes like this, I couldn’t even ask the young lady to stay with me… The duke is a fine man, and you, young lady, are honest and kind. This is good for both of you.”
Meiana smiled awkwardly. Then, as if in response, she gently placed her hand over the back of Lady Celine’s hand.
After finishing their tea, the duke said he should take his leave and stood up. He then placed a red silk pouch on Lady Celine’s worn tea table.
A clinking sound rang out. Meiana instinctively realized what was inside the pouch. It seemed Celine did too, as she turned toward the duke with an expression of clear discomfort.
The duke said.
“This is something Liriya asked me to deliver on her behalf. And…”
This time, a rustling sound followed. Taking a thin envelope from his coat, the duke placed it in the lady’s hand.
“It’s a letter Liriya sent from her travels. Have someone read it to you.”
For Lady Celine, the letter from her granddaughter was undoubtedly more comforting than the pouch of money. Her expression as she fidgeted with the envelope was complex. With a smile mixed with joy and sorrow, Celine, her hands trembling for a long while, spoke.
“Please send my regards to Liriya, Duke. I don’t want to say this, but as I grow older, my health worsens. It’s difficult… but please, tell her to come see me at least once, before it’s too late.”
For a moment, a very dark shadow passed over the duke’s expression. Meiana saw it, but Celine could not.
The duke said.
“I will do so, Madam.”
Celine gave Meiana a warm embrace as a farewell. Leaving behind her blessings for health and good fortune was no easy task.
On a night when the rain poured so heavily, the thought that Celine would have to sleep alone with Chals made Meiana’s steps heavy.
As they opened the shutters and stepped outside, a man holding a large umbrella stood waiting. He glanced at the unfamiliar Meiana but did not ask the duke who she was.
The duke said.
“This is the new maid hired for Valterminster starting today. She’ll accompany us to the duchy, so make sure to add more blankets in the carriage. And, as I mentioned earlier, arrange for a repairman to fix Lady Celine’s roof as soon as the day breaks. Someone meticulous and honest.”
“Understood, Duke.”
Meiana, flustered, asked.
“Am I… riding in the same carriage as you, Duke?”
“What, were you planning to ride in the luggage cart? If you have a hobby of curling up between cramped boxes, I won’t stop you.”
“Thank you for letting me ride with you.”
The duke glanced at Meiana, who had answered promptly. His lips moved ever so slightly, almost imperceptibly, before returning to an expressionless state.
The interior of the carriage was surprisingly spacious and luxurious. It might be cramped for the tall duke, but for Meiana, the seats were wide enough to lie down if she bent her knees.
Even so, the distance between them was ample, ensuring no unnecessary contact.
When the duke pulled the bell by the window, the carriage began to move slowly. The sound of the massive wheels rolling smoothly over the muddy ground could be heard. Through the foggy window, Celine’s house, dimly lit, gradually faded into the distance.
“I have something I’d like to ask, Duke.”
Duke Valterminster nodded. It was a gesture of permission. Meiana hesitated for a moment, biting the corner of her lip, before continuing.
“Is it true that Lady Celine is… related to you by marriage?”
“Is there a problem with that?”
“No, it’s not a problem… but you’re Duke Valterminster, aren’t you?”
“And what of it?”
Meiana’s brow furrowed slightly.
“It’s just… hard to believe that your brother, a member of the ducal family, married a commoner, and it was never mentioned.”
The duke’s eyebrow twitched slightly.
Trending
“From the sound of it, it seems the Povek viscount’s household has quite a few visitors.”
Meiana, struck to the core, pursed her lips for a moment.
The viscountess of Povek was extremely jealous, yet she was the type to constantly invite people over for lively parties.
Whether nobles or commoners, the guests were not much different in their tastes, and most of the viscountess’s visitors were as fond of sensational gossip as their hostess.
If Duke Valterminster’s brother had married a commoner… the many noble men and women frequenting the Povek household would surely have spread the rumor far and wide.
The duke let out a soft sigh. His gaze remained fixed on the window, where nothing could be seen.
“When people fall in love, there’s nothing they won’t do.”
“What does that mean?”
This time, there was no reply. Meiana didn’t press for an answer either. From experience, such behavior toward a noble would only shorten one’s life.
For a while, the carriage was filled only with the sound of rain pattering on the roof and the occasional clatter of the wheels. The rain showed no sign of letting up, and at this rate, the Siting River running through the capital might overflow.
What would happen to Lady Celine then? Meiana thought with a worried expression.
Many poor people like Celine lived in the capital’s lowlands. If the Siting River overflowed, the lady would be at a loss. Unless someone helped her…
“About that person named Liriya.”
The duke gazed at Meiana steadily. His gaze felt far colder and more detached than it had at Celine’s house.
“Does she not know that her grandmother is unwell? It seems like she hasn’t visited in quite a while. Even if the Valterminster duchy is far, at least once…”
“Well, I suppose they’ll meet someday.”
Meiana frowned and leaned forward.
“What do you…”
“Don’t you have something you’re more curious about? Don’t you?”
Meiana blinked a couple of times. She had an endless number of questions, but none were easy to ask.
Without waiting for her response, the duke asked again.
“What kind of work did you do at the Povek viscount’s household?”
Hearing his words, it felt as though the cheek struck by the viscountess throbbed again. Meiana no longer wanted to think about that place, but she had no choice but to answer.
After a brief sigh, she said.
“I did everything a maid could do, Duke. Cleaning, sewing, sometimes even making lace. I had to air out the dresses in the wardrobe to prevent moths. Before summer or winter, all the servants in the mansion would do a major cleaning, and I even had to take down the massive chandelier in the hall and polish every single one of the hundreds of crystals with a dry cloth.”
The duke’s expression, listening to Meiana, was hard to discern in the darkness. Yet, for some reason, it felt as though he was smiling. A mix of amusement and curiosity—perhaps it was her imagination?
Tapping the heavy handle of his cane with his fingertips, the duke tilted his head slightly.
“Alright. Let me ask again. What was the real reason you were dismissed?”
Meiana didn’t respond.
The duke, glancing around the carriage, continued.
“You can speak here, can’t you? It’s just the two of us.”
“There’s the coachman outside.”
“With the rain pouring like this, do you think he can hear us whispering inside the carriage? Besides, this glass is thicker than it looks. Unless you hit it with a cane, he wouldn’t even hear a knock. That’s why I pulled the bell.”
After saying this, the duke pointed to the bell by the window and tapped the glass. But the coachman, clad in a raincoat, didn’t even glance back.
He was probably too preoccupied with navigating the treacherous, rain-soaked road safely. Or perhaps he was busy cursing the heavens for sending such a downpour today…
Meiana blinked, as if lost in thought, then fixed her gaze on the duke with a composed posture.
“The viscountess misunderstood.”
“What kind of misunderstanding?”
“She thought I was trying to seduce the viscount.”
The duke’s expression turned intrigued. In truth, it looked almost like the mischievous grin of a naughty child.
Meiana said.
“I know what you’re thinking, but no, it’s not true.”
“You know what I’m thinking?”
“You’re wondering whether I actually tried to seduce him, aren’t you?”
Her tone was distinctly defiant. Her pride was wounded, and her tongue nearly tripped over itself in her agitation.
“The viscountess’s jealousy is well-known. Of course, so is the viscount’s debauchery. What I want to know is, when you were going through that, was there no one to help you?”
“Unfortunately, no. In fact, I wasn’t exactly welcomed by the other servants in the viscount’s household. It was like that for two years. At least when the lady dismissed me, the head butler, Roll, slipped me a few coins.”
Meiana shook her pocket, producing a faint jingle. It was so light it sounded almost pitiful.
The duke nodded with a subtle expression, impossible to read—whether it was sympathy for Meiana’s situation or disdain, it was hard to tell.
Meiana said.

“May I ask you something now, Duke? If that’s alright with you.”
