King Elmerat remained silent for a long while. Staring fixedly at Sediloi with an expression of utter bewilderment, as if he had no idea what to say, he finally buried his face in both hands and let out yet another deep sigh—so many he’d lost count.

“You’re impossible to understand. Sediloi, you could easily find a far better match. Is that all? If you merely declared your intention to marry, the noble families of El Blüyen would rush to offer you their finest daughters. You…”

“No one can ever replace Meiana, Your Majesty.”

Elmerat was speechless once again. She stared intently at Sediloi, her expression one of disbelief. Had she ever seen such unwavering resolve in him before? Aside from when handling state affairs, she swore she never had—not once in all the years she’d kept him close and raised him.

That first child of her dearest childhood friend—wrapped in swaddling clothes, face red and wrinkled, scrunched up in tears—had seemed as dear to her as her own.

And indeed, she had raised him with that love. To the king, Sediloi had long since become as a son.

“If that is truly your wish, so be it.”
