The duke’s carriage raced down El Laoutica’s main avenue and turned into a narrow alley.

Passersby could be seen glancing curiously at the carriage. Meiana cast a worried, anxious glance at Sediloi, but he appeared calmer than she had expected.

‘Perhaps he’s just not showing it on his face.’

She wasn’t unaware of the guilt Sediloi might feel toward Madam Celin. Though the lie had been told for her sake, whether Madam Celin would accept the truth as it was remained another matter entirely.

And what could possibly make up for having revealed the truth about her only granddaughter’s death so late…?

“My lord Duke, we’ve arrived.”

The coachman’s voice sounded. Only then did tension finally show on Sediloi’s face. As the wheels stopped, Ariante, roused from sleep, rubbed her still-drowsy eyes and shook her head vigorously.

“Father, where are we?”

Sediloi gathered Ariante into his arms. The child, knowing nothing of the situation, beamed brightly and hugged him tightly in return, leaving Meiana with no choice but to feel deeply conflicted as she watched.

“Ariante, listen carefully to what Father is about to tell you.”

Ariante, eyes wide open, glanced once at Meiana. She looked utterly bewildered—unsure what was happening, whether she ought to be nervous, or how to react to the suddenly serious atmosphere after having just woken up.

“It’s all right, my lady.”

Meiana spoke gently. At that, Ariante’s small shoulders seemed to relax slightly, as if reassured.

“What story is it?”

“Look out the window. Do you see a house?”
