Sediloi fixed Baker with a sharp, dark glare.

“That depends entirely on your conduct, Baker. From now on, you must repeat exactly what you’ve just told me—to anyone, anywhere, without omitting a single word. Do you understand?”

“To… to anyone…? What do you mean…?”

“That’s none of your concern. Zemero, take him away.”

When Zemero opened the door, Aint and Zelso entered and dragged Baker out. The old man seemed to have no strength left to struggle; he hung limp, dragged along the floor.

Sediloi had thought he wouldn’t be shocked—but he was. He felt his strength drain from his body in a way that even surprised himself. From the moment Jocelyn deliberately sabotaged the boat until Verbo and Liriya boarded it… How much time had passed? If only Baker had shouted out just once.
