Meiana lay on her side, propped up on one arm, gazing at Ariante. Sediloi, lying on the opposite side, mirrored her posture as if reflected in a glass. Ariante, holding one of each of their hands beneath the sheet, wore a blissful expression.

“It’s warm.”

Ariante spoke. For a moment, a complex smile flickered across Meiana’s face.

A memory from long ago, from her childhood, surfaced. She had been so young then—too young to even understand what death truly meant. It was from her previous life.

Had she been six years old, or perhaps seven, like Ariante? She remembered burrowing between her mother and father, giggling and playing, feeling as if flowers bloomed inside her head and the whole world was filled with joy and happiness.

“My lady, are you happy now?”

When Meiana asked, Ariante’s eyes widened as she looked at her, then nodded so vigorously her head covering nearly slipped off.

“I’m happy. So very happy! You know, it feels like both Mother and Father are here.”

Meiana’s gaze wavered as she drew a breath. Ariante closed her eyes with an innocent expression, and only Sediloi noticed Meiana’s inner turmoil.

“Good night, Father. Sleep well, Meiana.”

Sediloi gently kissed Ariante’s forehead and softly patted the sheet with his large hand, lulling the child to sleep.

Meiana felt the child’s fingers, clasped in her own, occasionally twitch. It felt as if tender affection and faint sorrow took turns rising and swelling within her.

“What happened with Swan?”

Sediloi asked in a quiet voice once Ariante had fallen soundly asleep. Meiana, who had been gazing endlessly at Ariante’s sleeping face, let out a soft laugh that sounded like a sigh.

“I chased away the monster hiding under the young master’s bed.”
