When Meiana squeezed her hand tightly, Ariante let out a happy little giggle.

“You promised.”

Ariante said.

“If my feelings haven’t changed by the time I’m sixteen, you absolutely must become my mother—by marrying my father. Understood?”

Meiana smiled and nodded.

After sending the children, who had played boisterously in the forest, back to the eastern wing, Ash immediately went to find Sediloi without even taking time to change his clothes. Sediloi, seated before the empty fireplace reading a letter, grinned at the sight of Ash and chided him.

“I clearly issued Ariante a strict order not to leave the house. What were you thinking, taking her into the forest?”

But Ash merely shrugged as if it were no big deal.

“That was all part of her lessons. If you have complaints, fire me.”

“You really make threats part of your daily routine, Ash. Word spread even at the Royal University, didn’t it? That you’d storm into the chancellor’s office at every opportunity, threatening to resign your professorship unless they did exactly as you demanded.”

“Since when did you become the sort of fool who believes rumors? They’re baseless gossip—pure slander.”

In truth, even those rumors were toned down—his actual antics had been so outrageous that few believed them—but Ash calmly insulted Sediloi and pulled a diamond-encrusted glass and a bottle of sherry from his shelf.

“Drinking already, in broad daylight?”
