A deep furrow formed between Sediloi’s brows. Yet Meiana, failing to notice it, stubbornly turned her gaze away and continued speaking.

“I’ve already told you clearly that I have absolutely no intention of sharing your bed, Duke. That remains true even now. But yesterday… Honestly, I’m not sure. I don’t even know what came over me. I spent the entire morning lying in bed regretting it. I…”

Meiana trailed off, biting her lower lip firmly.

She truly hadn’t left her room all morning. Beinti, Brigitte, and Ibi had taken turns worrying over her, but she’d sent them all away and simply lay there, wrapped tightly in her sheets.

Lying in bed, she covered her face with the sheets—still seeming to carry Sediloi’s scent—and thought about what she needed to say to him. Like memorizing lines for a play, she repeated the same words silently in her mouth dozens of times.

She had come here because she was confident she could speak without trembling before him. Had she not been, she would have stayed in her room, even making up an excuse of illness to Jemero. Her lines were perfect. Her reasoning sounded plausible.

In Meiana’s mind, this was the only way forward: to blame everything on her own mistake, make Sediloi angry, and thus ensure he’d lose all interest in her.

But now that she stood before him, she couldn’t speak as fluently as she’d planned. Her voice trembled, and her words came out haltingly. This won’t do, Meiana scolded herself inwardly, squeezing her eyes shut tightly. Not like this…

Breaking his silence, Sediloi spoke.

“Is that all you have to say to me?”

Meiana stared intently at Sediloi’s face, yet that alone revealed nothing. She couldn’t discern his intention in asking her that question or what emotions he was feeling.

She prided herself on understanding people’s inner thoughts. Though not particularly outgoing or sociable, possessing an extra lifetime of experience compared to others had unexpectedly become a powerful weapon—after all, no knowledge could surpass lived experience.

Yet even that proved utterly useless now. She couldn’t grasp anything about the Sediloi standing before her. All that grew clearer was the certainty that prolonging this conversation would bring no good. She felt increasingly uneasy, as if hearing a sharp warning signal.

“If you’ve finished saying what you wanted to say, then it’s my turn to speak.”

Meiana shook her head and stepped back.
