No Evil Lady in the World (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 11
“What did you say?”
The head chef roughly tossed aside the ladle he was using to stir the broth and turned toward Meiana.
However, Meiana’s spirit didn’t waver at all. With both hands on her hips, she took a step closer to the burly chef.
“If I’m wrong, then tell me, Chef, what exactly is wrong with what I said.”
“You…!”
“I’ll admit that the young lady is picky and hard to handle. But think about it. She’s only seven years old, seven! Kids that age can be unreasonably stubborn and capricious. Can’t you try to understand that?”
The chef furrowed his thick brows, snorted, and crossed his arms.
“You seem to be clueless, but do you think commoners who grow up rolling in the dirt are the same as noble children?”
“Commoner, noble, or royalty, kids are kids. And if you’re right, then you shouldn’t treat Lady Ariante like this. She’s the sole heir of the Valterminster Duchy!”
“The sole heir.”
The chef’s voice dripped with sarcasm.
At this point in the conversation, Meiana began to find his attitude not just unpleasant but strange. Even if the duke wasn’t present, they weren’t alone in the kitchen.
There were surely other cooks peeling potatoes in the pantry behind the shelves or preparing for dinner in the backyard.
Yet, to show such disrespect toward the young lady—what was going on? Did he really believe all the kitchen staff would keep quiet for his sake?
Or perhaps…
Meiana bit her lower lip, trying to shake off her confused thoughts. Then, with wide eyes, she forced an unnatural smile.
“Fine. If you, Chef, can’t bake a cake for the young lady, I’ll do it. Just let me use the fire.”
The chef let out a mocking laugh. If he tried to throw her out by force, Meiana was ready to put up a fight. Whatever the case, her job was to serve Ariante, and preparing the snacks she wanted was part of “serving the young lady”…
“Look, you clearly don’t know anything, but there’s no need to go to such lengths.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“If you’re curious, go ask the head butler. Or even the head maid. Tsk, tsk… Do you think you’re the first to have such foolish dreams? They all run away within a month or give up after learning the truth. So don’t waste your energy…”
Meiana cut him off.
“Enough with the useless talk. You say I don’t know anything, Chef. Well, let me tell you, the place I worked at before wasn’t exactly a walk in the park either. Rumors and gossip are everywhere, but they’re usually not worth the breath. The only answer I want to hear right now is, ‘You can use the fire.’ Got it?”
The chef, with an annoyed expression, snorted and turned back to stir the simmering broth.
“As long as you don’t bother me, do whatever you want. But don’t touch the dough I’ve prepared. That’s for baking dessert after dinner.”
That infuriating old grump. Meiana muttered curses under her breath. She was tempted to grab one of the ladles hanging along the wall and press it against his smug face.
But there was no time to glare at the chef. If she couldn’t use his dough, she needed to find something to make quickly. Before Ariante, irritated from not getting her snack, started breaking things.

When Meiana finally finished baking a piece of brownie with coarsely ground almonds, nearly an hour had passed since her argument with the chef.
As she hurriedly plated the steaming brownie without even letting it cool, the chef sneered at her.
“Another plate’s about to get smashed.”
Meiana didn’t respond and left the kitchen with quick steps. It wasn’t the “chocolate cake with seeds” Ariante had asked for, but maybe a brownie could be a reasonable compromise…
“Good thing I at least know how to bake brownies!”
In her previous life, cooking or baking wasn’t her hobby. She was a freelancer who made and sold clothes, especially for small dolls. Her interests were solely in handicrafts and sewing.
That one-day baking class she was dragged to by a friend, caught up in a fleeting trend… Who would’ve thought that single experience would help her in this way?
“Excuse me, it’s Meiana.”
Knocking and opening the door, Meiana passed through the living room and headed straight for the study where Ariante did her lessons.
The atmosphere felt oddly chilly. For a moment, she wondered if Ariante had run off again, but surprisingly, the girl was sitting quietly at her desk.
She looked displeased, with piles of homework taller than her seated height stacked on either side, but given her past behavior, Meiana was relieved she was even sitting there.
However, the expression of Teacher Biman, standing beside Ariante and watching her, was far from pleasant. Her dark, badger-like under-eye circles seemed even more pronounced today, and her overly heavy rouge moved unpleasantly with every twitch of her lips.
To be fair, she always looked like she was furious. Meiana had never once seen Teacher Biman with a soft or relaxed expression, let alone a smile. She was so stern and irritable that it was hard to believe she taught children.
“Lady Ariante, here’s your snack. Have it while you work.”
Ariante’s gaze shifted from Meiana’s face to the plate in her hands.
After twitching her small lips, Ariante muttered sulkily with a sour expression.
“That’s not a cake.”
“Well… it’s not a cake, but it’s kind of similar, isn’t it, my lady? Brownies are really delicious. I baked it myself, and it’s really…”
“You baked it?”
Ariante looked straight at Meiana. Her blue eyes glimmered strangely in the sunlight.
“Oh no, did I say too much? She’s going to make a fuss and refuse to eat it.”
Meiana thought to herself.

But then, something unexpected happened again. Ariante reached out as if asking for the plate. Meiana, wondering what was going on, quickly set the plate in front of her. If only she’d be satisfied with the brownie…
The moment Ariante reached for the brownie—
—Slap!
A thin rod sliced through the air from above. At the same time, a switch struck Ariante’s small hand with a sharp sound.
“Ouch!”
Ariante yanked her hand back, clutching it and glaring at Teacher Biman. Meiana, too, stared at the teacher with wide eyes.
Teacher Biman said in a stern voice.
“You may not have snacks until you’ve finished your work.”
Ariante’s small lips trembled. The thin, delicate skin on her hand was already turning bright red and swelling.
The moment her small hand reached for the ink bottle to knock it over—
“My lady hasn’t eaten properly since this morning, Teacher. She must be very hungry, so please let her have a snack while studying.”
Meiana hurriedly interjected.
Teacher Biman glared at her with wide eyes.
“I have been personally tasked by Duke Valterminster to educate the young lady properly. How dare a mere maid interfere?”
Meiana swallowed the anger rising within her and responded in as non-aggressive a tone as possible.
“I understand that. But the young lady hasn’t eaten properly since this morning. She needs to eat something to study. How can she focus on letters or numbers when she’s hungry?”
At that moment, Ariante reached for the brownie again. Teacher Biman, still glaring at Meiana, struck Ariante’s hand with precision, this time even harder. The sound was louder than before, and Ariante let out a sharp scream.
“What are you doing? Stop hitting her!”
Unable to hold back any longer, Meiana raised her voice. Her shout was so loud that not only Teacher Biman but even Ariante stared at her with parted lips in surprise.
“How dare you raise your voice at me…!”
As Teacher Biman furrowed her dark brows and stepped forward, Meiana swiftly turned toward Ariante.
“My lady, I’m sorry, but could you step outside for a moment? I’d like to speak with the teacher.”
Ariante seemed startled by this unexpected situation. Or perhaps she only saw it as a golden opportunity… It didn’t matter to Meiana.
The sound of a chair scraping rang out. The moment Ariante stood, Teacher Biman swung her switch, striking the large table twice.
“Where do you think you’re going, my lady! Sit down and continue your homework at once!”
“Go outside, my lady. Hurry.”
Glancing between the two, Ariante stuck out her tongue at Teacher Biman and scampered out of the room.
Teacher Biman, utterly shocked, gasped repeatedly while staring at Meiana. She looked ready to pounce and tear her apart.
“What do you think you’re doing!”
Teacher Biman shouted, her voice cracking unpleasantly at the end.
Meiana’s response came immediately.
“I think that’s my line, Teacher. Your job is to educate the young lady, not to whip her with a switch, is it? She’s seven years old. Don’t you know? She’s only seven!”
Teacher Biman, even more enraged by her retort, furiously struck the table with her thin switch.
“As a member of a noble family, she must have the awareness to match! Seven is old enough for that. But Lady Ariante has no such awareness. She’s utterly ill-mannered! If we don’t teach her proper etiquette now, she’ll bring great shame to the ducal house in the future!”
“Aren’t you expecting too much from a seven-year-old? Does she even understand what ‘awareness’ or ‘upholding the family’ means? And she shouldn’t have to! Seven is an age where she has the right to be ignorant of such things. Do you think any child can skip breakfast, go without snacks, and sit like a doll studying all day?”
