“What do you mean, ‘what’? A country bumpkin with no manners at all—there’s nothing you won’t say! I’ll teach you proper behavior!”

“A bumpkin with no manners—have you never wondered why someone like that ended up in a place like this? Haven’t you considered she might have pushed someone down a well or stuffed them into a haystack before running away?”

“What? What did you say? What?”

“I assure you, I’m not joking. If you’d like to check whether I’m serious or not, come over here and slap my cheek.”

Jocelyn’s eyes, usually unmoved by anything ordinary, flickered for just an instant. The disturbance was so slight that others would barely notice, yet to Jocelyn herself, it felt as jarring as being struck on the back with a log.

She had actually stumbled backward, pushed by a young maid who couldn’t have been more than twenty-two or twenty-three.

It was the first time she’d felt such a shock since Meiana had defiantly stood her ground without blinking, and since Sediloi had openly shielded that very Meiana.

This time, Jocelyn clutched her chest and gasped for breath. It felt as if someone had pierced her heart with a sharp needle—unbearable pain shot through her.

Ibi stared blankly at Jocelyn, who was panting heavily, then casually walked over to the well and drew fresh water. Jocelyn still hadn’t recovered from the lingering pain.

Ibi spoke.

“Miss Meiana told me not to get entangled with you if I could help it. So, if you don’t do anything to me—or to anyone else—I won’t do anything either. I’ll be a good girl. But I really could throw you into the well. I’m very strong, you see.”

Ibi’s words barely registered in Jocelyn’s ears. She tried to grab Ibi as she passed by, but the moment she stretched out her arm, another wave of intense pain surged through her.

“Ugh…!”

Ibi vanished through the side door. Just then, Kosha, the head maid, stepped outside while wiping her nose with a handkerchief and spotted Jocelyn. Her round face flushed bright red, as if set on fire.

“Oh dear, Housekeeper! What’s happened? Good heavens, why are you like this? Shall I call a physician?”
