My Sweet Enemy (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 12
Nok Hyeon returned to his office late after finishing the tasks he had to handle on-site.
On the sofa sat a flamboyantly dressed woman who looked out of place in the spotlessly clean, cold office.
She was in Nok Hyeon’s office—an office he never allowed anyone into except for work-related reasons, precisely because she was Shim Yoo Ran’s close aide.
He felt irritated all over again. Of all things, after already being watched by Yoo Ran’s eyes scattered throughout the company, he now had to deal with Lee Ju Yeon too.
Without even glancing in Joo Yeon’s direction, Nok Hyeon sat down in his chair.
“It’s been a while—you’re not even greeting me?”
Joo Yeon pouted her full lips, looking hurt.
Like Min Gyu, Joo Yeon had been Nok Hyeon’s high school classmate.
To be precise, she had been Min Gyu’s friend, yet she always acted as if she were Nok Hyeon’s friend too.
“What brings you here?”
At Nok Hyeon’s indifferent tone, Joo Yeon stood and walked toward him.
“I’m tired of acting and want to settle down now.”
Before Nok Hyeon married Tae In, Yoo Ran had chosen Joo Yeon as his prospective bride.
It wasn’t because Joo Yeon was exceptional.
She was simple-minded—easy for Yoo Ran to manipulate—and Yoo Ran had even planned to discard both her and Nok Hyeon together if anything went wrong, which was why she’d picked Joo Yeon as his match.
“Why are you telling me this?”
Joo Yeon’s eyes instantly flashed with anger.
Considering she’d been treated like a princess since her child-actor days, this kind of treatment was understandably upsetting.
But Nok Hyeon wasn’t the considerate type who cared about others’ feelings.
“If you really think about it, I’m at more of a disadvantage, aren’t I? You’ve already been married, but I haven’t. You should be begging me to meet you, not the other way around.”
Annoyed, Joo Yeon snapped out whatever came to mind—clearly unaware of what she was even saying.
That sort of tantrum might have worked on set, but not here.
It was the exact moment Nok Hyeon fully understood why Yoo Ran favored her.
When Nok Hyeon showed no reaction, Joo Yeon’s eyes darted as if reconsidering what she’d just done.
Then, as though switching roles in a performance, her expression changed.
“Mother wants the wedding to happen before the year ends.”
“Whose mother?”
A sneer played at the corner of Nok Hyeon’s lips.
Joo Yeon quickly covered her mouth with her hand, as if realizing her mistake.
“Whether that ‘mother’ is Shim Yoo Ran or Madam Choi Mo Ra, it’s equally disgusting.”
“……”
“Calling someone ‘mother’ really doesn’t suit you.”
At Nok Hyeon’s even colder expression, Joo Yeon flinched without realizing it.
Though her face flushed red and then pale, she couldn’t bring herself to speak rashly.
After opening and closing her mouth several times, Joo Yeon finally gathered the courage to speak.
“You couldn’t possibly have loved that woman, could you?”
Unable to hold back any longer, Nok Hyeon burst into laughter.
Her lines were too predictable to be entertaining.
At the same time, he thought of Tae In—unpredictable and impossible to pin down.
Suddenly, he felt thirsty—an unbearable, insatiable thirst nothing could quench.
Nok Hyeon stood up without hesitation.
“Where are you going?”
“To meet the ‘mother’ you mentioned.”
Yoo Ran’s office.
Directors Hwang and Yoon sat, venting their frustration.
Director Hwang in particular was berating Nok Hyeon, his unusually plump, dark-red lips twitching as he spoke.
“Are you really going to just sit back and watch?”
Yoo Ran smiled as she looked at Director Hwang, whose entire face—not just his lips—had turned dark red.
She was seasoned enough to smile even when upset.
Those whose weaknesses had been exploited and who’d sworn loyalty would betray her the moment their problem was resolved, so she had to be especially careful with them.
Trending
“How about sending him overseas instead of just to the department store?”
At Director Hwang’s suggestion, Director Yoon openly clicked his tongue.
“He only just came back from abroad—how can you send him away again already?”
The remark carried the unspoken rebuke: Think before you speak.
Right after graduating university, Nok Hyeon had been sent overseas to work. Out of sight, he’d returned with results in hand.
Later, using experience as an excuse, they’d transferred him to regional posts and never let him stay long enough to build any power base anywhere.
He’d silently done his job—and more—without a single complaint.
Keeping him close would’ve been most beneficial for the company, but something about Nok Hyeon’s eyes—so similar to Mo Ra’s—stirred an inexplicable aversion in her.
“Is he just lucky? Back when he was at the hotel, I even clapped when he pushed that ‘GreenSky’ thing or whatever it was, thinking he’d ruin himself—but then he suddenly swept awards and turned a failing hotel into the top earner in sales.”
“It’s GreenStay, not GreenSky.”
Director Yoon sighed and corrected him.
Yoo Ran, who usually kept a constant smile, suddenly hardened her expression.
She remembered that incident clearly.
To reduce single-use items, Nok Hyeon had removed disposable amenities from hotel rooms, switched packaging to recyclable materials, and even eliminated single-use slippers.
At first, guests had complained heavily.
It was only natural—they came to hotels to relax, not to be inconvenienced.
But then he installed vending machines in the lobby selling reusable slippers and toothbrushes and offered recycled merchandise.
As more customers resonated with the good intentions, the trend gradually spread to other hotels.
The timing helped too—it launched during Earth Month, and press coverage came at just the right moment.
It might have seemed perfect from the outside, but a closer look revealed just how cunning a fox Nok Hyeon truly was.
During the GreenStay implementation, Nok Hyeon cut ties with the subcontractor handling disposables—and hired only the subcontractor’s employees.
The subcontractor’s owners happened to be Yoo Ran’s father and older brother.
When she was an actress, Yoo Ran had done a background overhaul so people believed her parents lived abroad.
Yet her father and brother had used this as leverage to constantly demand money from her—even getting her to fund a proper company for them—only for Nok Hyeon to ruin it all.
After her younger brother Do Hyeon died, Nok Hyeon, who’d behaved like a tame lamb, had begun revealing his true nature, unable to hide his origins any longer.
It had been a mistake from the start to think they could tame a beast of prey.
“For now, let’s stay quiet—don’t provoke him unnecessarily.”
Worried Director Hwang might slip up, Yoo Ran gave a firm order.
Director Hwang’s careless words and actions always rubbed Yoo Ran the wrong way.
After Directors Hwang and Yoon left, Nok Hyeon visited. Yoo Ran wasn’t surprised—she’d half expected him.
Nok Hyeon settled naturally onto the sofa.
He fit in effortlessly wherever he went.
Even under open hostility, he never seemed servile; no matter his position, he kept others firmly under his heel.
As if born to lead.
“You’ve got that displeased look again.”
“Lee Ju Yeon just dropped by.”
Nok Hyeon replied with a fresh smile.
“Joo Yeon’s perfect for you, isn’t she? A perfect match.”
“Not even close.”
Nok Hyeon laughed as if hearing a terribly dull joke. Yoo Ran’s eyebrows twitched.
“Could it really be because of Tae In?”
Nok Hyeon lifted his head and looked at Yoo Ran.
Those emotionless eyes.
Though they resembled Mo Ra’s in shape, their gaze was different. Mo Ra’s eyes usually burned with anger, but Nok Hyeon never wasted energy on pointless anger or showed any sign of being shaken.
“There’s no one in this industry who doesn’t know your marriage was purely strategic.”
“……”
At Yoo Ran’s words, Nok Hyeon let out a short sigh.
Yoo Ran had wanted not only Nok Hyeon but also his wife Tae In under her control, to wield as she pleased. But Tae In refused to comply, which made Yoo Ran view her as a thorn in her side.
“Aren’t you wasting your youth? I was your age when…”
“I entered the house.”

The age at which she’d entered the house where the legal wife openly lived, caused the death of that wife’s son, and then drove the heartbroken wife out by driving her mad.
As if understanding the deliberately swallowed words, Yoo Ran slowly furrowed her brow.
“You’re being sharp—unpleasantly so.”
“Please understand. I’ve lost my younger brother, my mother, and recently even my wife.”
Though Nok Hyeon remained sharp-edged, Yoo Ran chose not to point it out and instead smiled magnanimously.
“You can replace a brother, a mother, or even a wife—if you just adjust your mindset a little.”
Still smiling, Nok Hyeon clenched his teeth tightly.
Nok Hyeon found himself unconsciously heading to the Gapyeong villa.
Earlier that morning, he’d decided he needed some distance from Tae In after what happened at dawn.
Tae In still hadn’t regained her memories, and her behavior likely stemmed from mistakenly believing they’d been a normal married couple.
So while his mind told him to be careful, his body didn’t listen.
After parking in the garage, Nok Hyeon walked up to the villa with slightly hurried steps.
Not far ahead, he saw Tae In lying face-down on a garden table.
She wore a floral set, suggesting she’d been out. As he approached, worried he might need to assign someone to watch her 24/7, a faint scent of alcohol reached him.
Had she been drinking outside too?
When he gently grasped Tae In’s shoulder, the puppy sleeping soundly at her feet stood up and barked loudly.
Seeing the leash barely clinging to Tae In’s hand, it seemed she’d brought the dog herself.
Bold little thing, for such a tiny pup.
The sight reminded him so much of Tae In that a smile tugged at Nok Hyeon’s lips.
“What are you doing, already copying your owner?”
Woken by the barking, Tae In groggily opened her eyes.
“Kang Nok Hyeon…?”
Half-awake, she reached a hand toward Nok Hyeon’s face as if checking whether he was real or a dream.
“Why are you so drunk?”
Tae In shook her head hard and frowned.
“Why don’t you like me?”
“What?”
“Why do you hate me?”
Nok Hyeon stared silently at the drunk Tae In. She kept trying to force her heavy eyelids open but finally gave in and closed them.
As she started to fall backward, Nok Hyeon barely caught her and pulled her into his arms.
“How could I ever hate you.”
Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away
This is also on my reread list!
This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.
Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.
But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.
Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.
I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.
The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.
As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
