Taeein answered as if she had been waiting. Hearing Taeein’s voice, Nokhyeon’s tense body seemed to loosen up.
“What were you doing?”
She asked in a tone different from a moment ago.
I’m really going crazy.
“Why?”
I want to eat so many things, and it keeps changing.
Taeein complained with a serious tone. Finding it cute, Nokhyeon chuckled softly.
“What do you want to eat?”
… Nah, I’ll just order something.
“No, I’ll be there soon. Just tell me.”
It’s a bit long to say, I’ll send a message.
Nokhyeon chuckled at Taeein’s unavoidable response.
The call soon ended, and a long message arrived.
Checking the message, Nokhyeon burst into laughter at the last sentence.
[It’s not what I want to eat, it’s what the baby wants to eat.]Nokhyeon went to a nearby traditional market. Everything Taeein wanted was there.
Parking the car in the public parking lot, I quickly searched for the target.
“Bindaetteok, sundae, kimbap, and fried chicken, please pack them.”
She said she couldn’t eat greasy food, but it seems she improved after taking her indigestion medicine. Fortunately.
“So much?”
“My wife is pregnant.”
Upon hearing that, the kind-hearted owner gave her additional food for free. Nokhyeon carried a handful of food back to the car.
After grabbing her phone and sending a message to Taeein, who was waiting for her, that she was on her way, she left.
The nickname Taeein had asked for was also chosen.
Ato, meaning gift.
Both Taeein and the child she carried were gifts to Nokhyeon.
She was truly happy.
Almost to the point of questioning if she deserved this happiness.
Not long after, a call came from Taeein. It seemed she was checking the message.
While waiting at a traffic light, Nokhyeon answered the call.
“Yeah, Taeein. What else do you need?”
Thinking Taeein wanted to eat something again, she asked, but Taeein remained silent.
“Taeein?”
Soon an unpleasant laughter echoed in the car.
A sense of unease surged within her.
Hyung, it’s me.
It was Jiwon’s voice.
“Why does Taeein have your phone?”
Trying to stay calm, her voice was already trembling.
I think I should say my farewell to Hyung.
Feeling uneasy, Nokhyeon looked around and noticed a dump truck rushing towards her.
The same situation as before unfolded. There was no way to avoid it.
Bang! With a loud noise, her body experienced a shock.
The pain that pressed on her entire chest made it impossible to breathe properly.
Wake up, Kang Nokhyeon. Taeein is waiting. You need to go quickly.
Contrary to her thoughts, her body had already stiffened beyond the pain, and her eyes kept closing.
Even if consciousness faded away, hearing seemed to be alive.
Although she didn’t want to hear it, Jiwon’s voice kept pounding in her ears.
I did that, right? Ruined something precious to Hyung. But this might be better. Goodbye, Hyung.
Hyung.
The last words echoed like an echo. The piercing noise disappeared, and her consciousness faded away.
“Hyung, hyung, hyung!”
The voice that had become faint was now loud again, and Nokhyeon found the owner of the voice.
Dohyun was holding a robot and smiling brightly.
“Hyung, these are brother robots. They save each other when in danger. If Hyung is in danger, I’ll definitely save you.”
A flashlight or something.
Nokhyeon burst into a bitter laugh while vividly capturing Dohyun’s image in her eyes.
After the laughter subsided, tears streamed down her face.
Around Dohyun’s birthday, she always had nightmares. Dreams of accidents and suffering instead of this sight.
So, even in her dreams, Nokhyeon couldn’t say what she wanted to say to Dohyun.
“Kang Dohyun…?”
Her voice became difficult. As if she had returned to that time.
“Why? Hyung, did you have a scary dream?”
“Yeah…”
It was a very scary dream, a dream where you die.
Nokhyeon sighed heavily and caressed her long-lost brother’s face with trembling hands.
Is this the flashlight she wanted?
Unable to convey the words she wanted to say, it seems this scene is being shown to her before she dies.
Dohyun always wanted to play with Nokhyeon. Whether it was fun or not, he always followed his brother around, talking incessantly.
When Nokhyeon angrily refused to teach her how to ride a bike, the existence of a younger brother was just annoying at the time.
Nokhyeon squeezed her voice and said the words she hadn’t been able to say for a long time. It was painful and sad, as if cutting her chest with a knife.
“I’m sorry, Dohyun. I didn’t teach you how to ride a bike.”
Dohyun grinned. She wanted to hold onto this faint specter a little longer before it disappeared.
“I’m sorry, Hyung was wrong. I’m sorry, Dohyun.”
Nokhyeon burst into tears like a child. Dohyun, as if understanding Nokhyeon’s feelings, patted her shoulder with small hands.
“It’s okay. Hyung is still my hero.”
Although young, Dohyun comforted Nokhyeon with a brave tone. Nokhyeon was astonished.
“Where is a hero so weak and cowardly.”
Nokhyeon smirked, and Dohyun followed suit with a laugh.
The sound of their laughter seemed distant, as if it were echoing from afar.
The touch of the hand comforting her shoulder seemed to release the suppressed pain in her chest.
If there is a next life, let me be born as your younger sibling again.
At that time, I’ll love you without reservation. I won’t find you annoying. I’ll protect you.
Nokhyeon uttered words mixed with tears.
“We’ll meet soon, then please protect me, Hyung.”
Dohyun said in an even calmer voice. Nokhyeon gazed at such Dohyun with teary eyes.
“What…?”
“I like it, that name.”
Dohyun conveyed an inexplicable message and smiled. However, soon the laughter disappeared from Dohyun’s face.
“But it’s better to wake up now. Wake up, Hyung!”
Suddenly, Dohyun shouted and pushed Nokhyeon’s shoulder.
And at the same time, Nokhyeon opened her eyes. The pungent smoke obscured her vision.
An accident had happened, and Nokhyeon was still in the driver’s seat.
Nokhyeon unbuckled her seatbelt and opened the swaying car door.
Coughing, she coughed with difficulty.
Nokhyeon, who barely escaped, coughed continuously and then sat down.
Blood trickled down from her forehead, and she wiped it hastily with the back of her hand.
With a bang, the car behind Nokhyeon exploded.
She turned her head to watch the scene blankly.
When male lead is the homewrecker
“I know she doesn’t love him.”
I’ve read the novel below twice already. Girls, I’m highly recommending it to you!
The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
