Harold asked in flustered shock at the realization that Lily already knew the truth—and at the same moment, he deduced who had told her.

It must have been Olivia Maximilian.

He’d already felt uneasy after hearing from the butler earlier that day that his sister-in-law had visited and that Lily, after speaking with her, had sat there as if her spirit had left her body.

After all, just like his brother Hamilton, Olivia still disapproved of Lily and had been firmly against Harold’s marriage to her.

The Duchess Maximilian shared the same opposition to the marriage.

“It hasn’t even been half a year since you two met, and it’s only been a month since Viscountess Benjamin’s divorce—how can you talk about marriage already? Isn’t it rushing things too much? I think it would be better to take at least two years to reflect calmly before proceeding.”

Though the Duchess had cautiously offered her suggestion, Harold flatly refused.

Not only that—he’d even insisted on holding the wedding in Cardin, a border region far from the capital, which threw House Maximilian into complete turmoil.

He thought he’d finally managed to persuade his frantic parents, who had adamantly insisted that such a thing would never be allowed—but judging by Olivia’s visit, it seemed he hadn’t succeeded after all.

Why did his sister-in-law have to come of all people? Harold’s eyes narrowed as he recalled Olivia, who lived by the creed that the pen was mightier than the sword. Judging by how things looked, she’d probably told Lily everything—and that thought instantly filled him with irritation.

“Judging by your reaction, it seems everything Marchioness Olivia told me was true.”

“Lily.”

At her sigh-laden words, Harold tightly grasped her hand.

“It wasn’t that I was trying to hide anything. After all, it’s our wedding—keeping it secret wouldn’t make any sense.”
