A sharp, grating sound echoed through the first-floor lobby like a reverberating shout. Everyone—guild employees going about their duties and customers visiting the guild alike—stared in shock at Lily, who had just slapped Frederick across the cheek.

“B-boss.”

Robert was no different. Rarely flustered, Robert started to approach, but Frederick raised a hand to stop him. Then, using that same hand, he slowly brushed his stinging cheek and looked down at Lily. His eyes, dark and heavy with shadow, were murderous.

“I didn’t realize you had such bad hands.”

His flat, monotonous voice sent chills down the spine, yet Lily showed neither agitation nor retreat. Instead, she glared at him even more fiercely and parted her lips.

“I had no idea you were such an ill-mannered, despicable man. How could you—how could you…!”

The more she thought about what Frederick had done, the more speechless anger choked her. Standing before the scoundrel who had desecrated her father’s grave, she felt powerless—slapping his cheek was all she could do. Tears burned hot behind her eyes.

But Lily refused to cry pitifully in front of Frederick. She bit down hard on her lips to hold back the tears. She bit so fiercely that the wound she’d already scabbed over split open again, but she didn’t care.

“Why… why would you do something like that?”

Lily had no intention of understanding or forgiving Frederick, no matter what excuse he offered—but she still wanted to know. Why, for what possible reason, had he disturbed a dead man’s resting place? She desperately wanted to peer into his mind.

“Is this revenge… because I didn’t choose you yesterday?”

Frederick had shown interest in her father’s grave long before this. So it didn’t seem like he’d done this madness solely out of spite—but she couldn’t think of any other reason, so she asked.

At her sharp, thorny question, Frederick gave a cold laugh and leaned his upper body toward her. The unnecessary closeness made Lily flinch and stiffen her shoulders—memories of that horrifying incident, when he’d spoken weirdly about children, flashed back into her mind.

Surely he wouldn’t dare do anything strange with so many eyes watching—there were not only guild staff but other customers present too.
