“Pull yourself together, Lily.”

No matter how much she wanted to retrieve Harold’s letter, searching through Frederick’s bedroom was absolutely insane. There was no guarantee the letter was even there, and if Frederick found out she’d sneaked into his room, he certainly wouldn’t let it go unpunished.

Of course, it had been Frederick who first searched Lily’s room and stole the letter—well, technically Robert had done it.

‘That’s precisely the problem.’

Frederick was surely behind this whole affair. But his loyal aide Robert would never admit, even under threat of a knife to his throat, that he’d acted on Frederick’s orders. In other words, there was no way to hold Frederick accountable.

Unless a missing shoe or Harold’s letter turned up in his bedroom or study… things might be different.

Her desire to recover the letter grew stronger, and Lily clenched her jaw tightly. The fact that Frederick and his in-laws were all out, and the servants never even ventured near the second floor, only encouraged her further. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to search his room without getting caught.

“Just a quick look.”

With her mind made up, Lily gathered the heavy folds of her dress. She walked as quietly as possible at first, but her steps gradually quickened. Holding her breath, she swiftly crossed the hallway and stopped right in front of Frederick’s study.

“Phew.”

Her chest rose and fell heavily as she finally exhaled the breath she’d been holding. Nervous and anxious, Lily moistened her dry lips with her tongue before stepping into Frederick’s study.

It had been over a year since she married Frederick and moved into this mansion, yet she’d never once entered his study. He had granted her permission to use it whenever she wished to read, but she’d refused—simply because she never wanted to step into his personal space.

Yet here she was, entering it this way.

Lily carefully closed the door behind her and looked slowly around the study. Though it was an ordinary room with nothing particularly remarkable, the mere fact that it belonged to Frederick made her uneasy. Even the lingering scent of him in the air felt unpleasant.
