Harold neglected the mansion the Emperor had granted him, simply because it was bothersome. He had no intention of managing a residence in the capital anyway, since he would eventually return to Cardin. Whenever he needed to come to the capital, he could just stay at Duke Maximilian’s Mansion.

However, Duchess Maximilian thought differently. Not only did she have no intention of sending her beloved son back to the perilous border region, but she firmly believed he would spend his honeymoon at Earl Brayden’s Mansion.

Thus, Duchess Maximilian meticulously maintained Earl Brayden’s Mansion—thoroughly cleaning it and even furnishing it completely with new furniture.

Given that it was a mansion bestowed by the Emperor and that his mother had taken such special care of it, Harold really ought to have visited at least once—but he never did. Even when the Duchess, frustrated, urged him to go see it, he would merely agree verbally without ever actually showing up.

“The Master requested that you bring two discreet maids and come secretly to Earl Brayden’s Mansion, Mr. Butler.”

Naturally, Coleman Jonas—the elderly butler of House Maximilian—was puzzled to hear that Harold was at Earl Brayden’s Mansion. He even wondered whether Harold had truly summoned him. If the message hadn’t come directly from Harold’s aide, Dillon, he would have double-checked its authenticity.

“Oh, and he also said to bring medicine to make bruises disappear.”

Why would he need that? If Harold had been injured, he would have asked for a physician, not medicine. Besides, Harold was the type who’d casually brush off even severe bruising, saying it was “just a bruise.”

“Understood.”

Though filled with questions, the elderly butler—who had served House Maximilian faithfully for over thirty years—simply accepted the order without protest. After all, that was what a proper servant ought to do. Coleman Jonas immediately set off for Earl Brayden’s Mansion with two discreet maids, just as Harold had instructed.

Earl Brayden’s Mansion was located on the same Royal White Street as Duke Maximilian’s Mansion—a prestigious avenue reserved exclusively for high-ranking nobles of earl rank or higher. Earl Stacy’s Mansion was also situated on this street.

Despite being on the same street, the district was so vast that it took over thirty minutes by carriage to get there. Remembering Harold’s instruction to come discreetly, Coleman Jonas and the maids alighted in a side alley some distance from Earl Brayden’s Mansion and entered through the rear gate rather than the main entrance.

Although Duchess Maximilian maintained the mansion, she hadn’t hired any permanent staff for it. There was no master to serve, and whenever needed, she could simply send servants from Duke Maximilian’s Mansion—so there was no need to keep anyone on-site.

Without any human presence, the atmosphere of Earl Brayden’s Mansion felt eerie. Had it not been so impeccably maintained, one might have mistaken it for an abandoned house. It hadn’t felt this terrifying during the daytime. Coleman Jonas was walking down the second-floor corridor, trying to recall past memories, when—
