My Mistress Became My Wife (Completed Main Story) - Chapter 73
Outwardly, she spoke boldly as if not the slightest bit afraid, but inwardly, it was a different story. Fear and worry swirled inside her like a raging storm. She kept swallowing down impure emotions that threatened to burst forth every now and then, until her palms were covered in countless fingernail marks.
“…….”
Normally, whenever Lily defied Frederick’s wishes, he would threaten her by holding her mother hostage. So she had expected him to do the same this time—but unexpectedly, he said nothing at all. From the quick sideways glance he cast toward Harold, it seemed he was gauging Harold’s reaction.
Honestly, not only his personality but also his actions were the very definition of cowardice. Lily deeply regretted having chosen such a man as her husband.
An awkward, heavy silence filled the corridor. Frederick, his face clearly brimming with dissatisfaction, alternated his gaze between Lily and Harold before tightly shutting and then reopening his eyes.
“I shall take my leave first, my lord Earl. I sincerely hope our next conversation will be a more pleasant one.”
His words clearly emphasized just how unpleasant the current situation was. Harold nearly sneered, thinking such a thing would never happen even if he rose from the dead, but instead simply gave a slight nod. He held back from adding another word, worried it might make Lily uncomfortable—and besides, he could afford such restraint because he was already the victor.
Frederick merely shot his wife a sharp glare and offered no parting words of farewell. Lily felt both relieved and uneasy about this. It strongly reminded her of the calm night before a violent storm—making her wonder what massive explosion he was holding back for later. Just the thought dried her mouth and made her vision spin.
“Are you all right?”
Even after Frederick had left, Lily’s expression showed no sign of improvement, prompting Harold to ask with concern.
“No.”
She wasn’t in the mood to lie and say she was fine—and besides, any lie would clearly be seen through—so Lily answered honestly.
“I’m not all right at all…but I’ll have to try my best to be.”
She’d anticipated backlash ever since choosing Harold over Frederick. Though she worried the resulting uproar might be even greater than she’d expected, she didn’t regret her decision. Or rather, she couldn’t afford to waste time on regret. It was wiser to spend that time figuring out how to deal with Frederick.
“I just hope he doesn’t touch my mother….”

She turned around upon hearing the noise.
He looked up at her, his eyebrows drooping: “My hand… has no strength.”
“Shall I… feed you?” she asked tentatively.
He opened his mouth cheerfully: “Ah—”
Thinking she was drowning, he jumped in without hesitation to save her, but nearly drowned himself. In the end, it was she who swam over to rescue him, giving him air underwater.
