Thud. Something brushed against her foot, and Lily, who had dozed off, slowly opened her eyes. Her blurry gaze swept across the room, thick with darkness. Though she’d lived in this bedroom for over a year, she looked around as if she were a stranger seeing it for the first time, then picked up the gossip pamphlet that had fallen to the floor—the very thing that had startled her awake.

Lily loved reading anything she could get her hands on—essays, lost manuscripts, books—but she did not like gossip pamphlets. Gossip pamphlets printed anything that could stir public interest or curiosity, regardless of whether it was true or not. Having been victimized by them many times herself, Lily couldn’t even bear to look at them.

Yet Samantha had brought this particular pamphlet because its cover boldly proclaimed, [Exclusive: Earl Harold Brayden—What’s Next for Him?]. The moment Lily saw his name, she’d picked it up as if spellbound, and by the time she came to her senses, she was already seated on her bedroom sofa, reading it.

Compared to the bold “exclusive” headline on the cover, the content was underwhelming. It merely repeated known facts: that the Emperor planned to appoint Harold Brayden—a national hero and exceptional knight—as Captain of the Imperial First Knights; that nobles from across the Empire, as well as foreign aristocrats and even royalty, were sending him marriage proposals due to his unmarried status.

Having needlessly read this and painfully reaffirmed the gap between Harold and herself, Lily placed the pamphlet down on the sofa table with a bitter smile. She’d intended to finish reading it since she’d already brought it over, but it was so dull she’d dozed off. The past few days had been filled with too much to think about, and her restless nights were partly why she’d fallen asleep so easily.

How long had she slept? Lily checked the time. 11:20 PM. She’d started reading the pamphlet around 8 PM, which meant she’d slept for over three hours straight.

“No wonder I feel so refreshed.”

Now that she was supposed to be sleeping, she was frustrated to be wide awake—until she heard a soft tapping sound. She turned toward the window, thinking it was rain, but there wasn’t even a single dark cloud in sight. Instead, the clear, silvery moonlight softly illuminated the world outside.

“Guess I must’ve imagined it.”

She was about to dismiss it as nothing, but then came another, heavier *thud-thud*. Unable to ignore the now-louder sound, Lily opened the window to investigate. The cold night breeze tousled her loosely tied hair.

“There’s nothing….”

As she scanned the area, Lily’s eyes widened upon spotting Harold standing right beneath her window.

What was he doing here?

While Lily was so stunned she nearly forgot to breathe, Harold merely grinned brightly and waved. Bathed in moonlight that seemed to spotlight him like a stage actor, he looked as though he stood not in a garden but on a theater stage. Lily, staring at him like a dazed audience member, finally snapped out of her trance and leaned out the window.

“Why are you here?”
