Just what on earth is going on inside that head of yours to come up with such an interpretation? Lily gaped in utter disbelief. She already knew well enough that Frederick was an impolite man, but he still managed to astonish her every time she saw him.

“Judging by your inability to answer, there must indeed be something going on.”

Furious at Frederick’s stubborn insistence on interpreting things however he pleased, Lily clenched her fists tightly and spat out her words bitterly.

“It’s not that at all! I’m angry because you insulted my father. You’d react the same way, wouldn’t you? If someone slandered your mother, you’d be furious too. Would you really feel good if someone accused you of being overly sensitive or suggested you were guilty just because you got angry?”

Frederick stroked his chin, pondered for a moment, then replied.

“Of course I’d feel bad, but I wouldn’t lose my temper right away like you did, my lady. First, I’d ask why they said such a thing, and only get angry if they were falsely accusing me without reason.”

“So you’re saying you have a reason to suspect my father.”

Frederick silently smiled, confirming it.

“Did Earl Stacy say that? That my father stole something belonging to him?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

“If you’d really wanted to know, you shouldn’t have run away from the banquet, my lady.”

It was clear he had no intention of telling her outright. He’d revealed almost everything yet concealed the most crucial detail, which struck Lily as highly suspicious. Narrowing her eyes, she glared at her husband. Unfazed, Frederick asked another question.

“So I’m asking—where were you? I looked all around the banquet hall and couldn’t find you.”

“If you’d really wanted to know, you should’ve followed me.”
