The party Lily and Frederick were invited to was to celebrate Harold Maximilian receiving the title of earl.

Since they hadn’t been invited to the earlier investiture ceremony, they only needed to arrive at the Imperial Banquet Hall by 7 p.m., when the celebratory party began. Yet Lily, who had been puzzled as to why she had to wake up at dawn and start preparing, soon realized the reason.

Just bathing under the maids’ care took nearly an hour, followed by a special massage that supposedly made her skin as white and flawless as white jade—lasting over two hours.

Aside from that, she had to apply hair oil to make her locks appear lustrous, have her fingernails and toenails neatly trimmed, and undergo various other treatments, so much so that most of the morning had already slipped away. In the afternoon, she was still busy lacing herself tightly into a corset, donning her dress, and receiving makeup, leaving her thoroughly overwhelmed.

Though her outward appearance grew increasingly elegant and beautiful with all this effort, Lily felt none of the joy. She was simply exhausted and found everything tedious. She couldn’t even understand why she had to dress up like this just to attend a party she didn’t want to go to.

If she had to pinpoint a reason, was it to look prettier than the noblewomen who had shared Frederick’s bed?

At this sudden thought, Lily let out a bitter laugh. Her situation—having to adorn herself just so she wouldn’t lose to women who’d slept with her husband—felt utterly wretched and pitiful. Her reluctance to attend the party only grew stronger.

“Just your lips left now.”

Regardless of her feelings, however, preparations for the party were nearly complete. Lily gazed at her reflection in the mirror. Though the maids kept praising her beauty, she saw only discomfort in herself—like someone wearing ill-fitting clothes.

As she finished applying red lipstick and checked once more for anything amiss, a knock sounded at the door.

“Young Mistress, Master says you’re to come down alone in twenty minutes.”

Upon hearing the butler’s report, Lily checked the time. It was currently 4:20 p.m. Although the party started at 7 p.m., factoring in travel time to the Imperial Banquet Hall and other considerations, they absolutely had to leave by 5 p.m. at the latest. With little time remaining, the maids hastened their final touches.

“Is there anything you dislike about how you look?”

Lily wanted to say, “Everything,” but knowing it would be pointless, she silently shook her head. The maids smiled proudly, as if they’d expected exactly that.

She draped a fluffy white fur stole over her bare shoulders and slipped on lace gloves.
