Early in the morning, having skipped breakfast and finished preparing to go out, Lily looked at her reflection in the mirror. No matter how many times she saw herself in a black veil and black dress, she never quite got used to it.

“I hope I never get used to it.”

Wearing this outfit so often meant there would be many more anniversaries to observe—and she never wanted to experience again the grief of losing someone she loved.

Lily straightened her slightly crooked collar, picked up the bag containing items to place before her father’s grave, and left her bedroom. Emily, who had been waiting outside, approached her with a worried look.

“Are you really sure it’s alright to go alone, my lady?”

“It’s fine. And I won’t be alone—there’ll be a guard knight with me.”

When Lily had expressed her wish to quietly observe her father’s memorial alone, Harold had paused for a moment before suggesting she take a guard knight along. He’d said it was dangerous for her to go out alone, not knowing what the Second Prince might do.

Having personally experienced just how unhinged the Second Prince was, Lily readily accepted Harold’s suggestion.

“I’ll be off, then.”

“Please be careful! You must come back safe!”

Lily gently patted Emily’s head, whose worry still hadn’t eased, then descended the stairs. As she walked through the hall toward the carriage waiting outside the annex, she noticed someone familiar already seated inside.

“Come on in.”

It was Harold himself. He, too, wore black—hardly the attire of someone merely waiting to speak with her. Overwhelmed by an uncanny feeling, as if she’d come face-to-face with a real black panther, Lily stared at him blankly before snapping out of her daze and asking,

“Why are you here? Don’t tell me… you’re the guard knight?”

Harold simply smiled in silence—it was confirmation. She’d expected a knight from House Maximilian, or perhaps Dillon Lamport, but never imagined Harold would come himself. Though surprised, she also felt this was exactly what she’d secretly anticipated.
