The moment she heard the answer she’d been hoping for, Lily’s green eyes widened. Her fingertips, hastily grasping the water glass, trembled just as much as her eyes.

“Lily?”

Seeing her filled not with jealousy but with anxiety and worry, Harold called out to her, slightly taken aback.

But she gave no reply. After gulping down the cold water, Lily finally set down her emptied cup and parted her damp lips.

“Princess Hertha wouldn’t have come merely to pay a sick visit… She must have come because of what happened last time. You left her behind to save me and Mother, so she must be angry…”

“No.”

Having finally understood why Lily was reacting this way, Harold cut her off firmly.

“It’s true Princess Hertha didn’t come simply to pay a sick visit, as you said—but she didn’t come to reproach you for that incident either. If that were the case, she would have summoned me to the Imperial Palace instead of coming here herself.”

Even after Harold reassured her there was nothing to worry about, the unease coloring Lily’s face refused to fade. If only he’d known it would turn out like this, he wouldn’t have said anything at all. Harold clicked his tongue, cursing his own late regret.

“Is that the only thing troubling you?”

Wanting to lighten her gloomy mood, even now, Harold smiled playfully as he spoke.

“I’d hoped you’d be jealous that you and the princess spoke alone together, but since you’re only worried, I’m a bit disappointed.”

Lily blinked widely, as if not understanding his words at first. Then, letting out a soft gasp, she smiled faintly.

“How could I possibly be jealous?”

Not only did she say she wasn’t jealous—she emphasized “how could I.” Harold’s lips twisted sideways, displeased by her answer, which seemed to entirely dismiss her own feelings.
