Though two years had passed, Lily remembered that day vividly, as if it had happened just yesterday. How could she forget? It was the horrific accident that shattered her dreams and hopes overnight. Hoping desperately that her mother would be safe, Lily walked down the dark corridor. She longed to run, but the surroundings were too dim to allow it. Though she’d walked this path dozens of times before, today it felt as unfamiliar as if she were here for the first time.

“Cough.”

Her eyes and throat stung fiercely from the acrid smoke, making it hard to see or even breathe. Lily repeatedly coughed dryly and wiped away her tears with the back of her hand. Yet no matter how much she wiped, the tears wouldn’t stop—perhaps because they weren’t caused by smoke alone, as they now poured out even more uncontrollably.

“Kyaa!”

Startled by the explosion-like roar, Lily stumbled backward. Suddenly, something caught her foot, and she fell heavily onto the floor. Her tailbone throbbed from the impact, but her shock outweighed the pain.

What was that sound just now? Still dazed, Lily looked toward where the noise had come from, then lowered her gaze, puzzled by the soft, yielding sensation beneath her hand. There, staring wide-eyed directly at her, was a woman.

“Aaahhh!”

Faced with a scene straight out of a horror novel, Lily shrieked and scrambled backward while still seated. But the other woman didn’t react. Only after several dozen seconds did Lily realize the woman had died, crushed beneath the rubble of the collapsed building.

And perhaps that woman’s fate might soon be hers as well. Maybe she’d die in an even more gruesome way—burned alive, for instance.

Though encountering someone burned to death was rare, Lily had unfortunately experienced that rarity once before—not by accident, but by choice.
