Clack-clack. The rhythmic sound of hooves echoed steadily inside the carriage, which was steeped in quiet stillness. Lily stared blankly out the window as if hypnotized by the noise. Her eyes took in the lush green rows of trees and the busy people moving about, yet her mind kept replaying the conversation she’d had with Olivia.

“If the viscountess leaves, the young master will surely come looking for you. I’m trying to prevent that—he won’t be able to find her if she’s hidden well, so please just do as I say.”

Lily wanted to tell Olivia not to worry, that she could hide perfectly fine on her own—but she couldn’t bring herself to say it. Because it would have been a blatant lie. She didn’t want to make another promise she couldn’t keep.

For the same reason, she accepted Olivia’s proposal. If she fled carelessly and got caught by Harold again, it would all be for nothing. Even if it bruised her pride a little, accepting Olivia’s help was the safer choice.

“But I can’t leave the capital.”
