Only after leaving the room did Lily realize this place was the Praxis Hotel. It was the most luxurious hotel in the city, one that required not only immense wealth but also high status and illustrious reputation to even stay at.

The fact that she’d stayed in the top-floor suite of this hotel meant the man’s family was at least of an earl’s rank—and possessed staggering wealth to boot.

And she’d not only spent the night with such a man but had even asked him to take her as his mistress?

You’re insane, Lily. Truly out of your mind.

“Haah.”

Realizing anew just how crazed her actions had been, Lily let out a sigh that bubbled up from the deepest part of her soul. She was also uneasy about the fact that, because the man had abruptly left, she hadn’t managed to clean up any of yesterday’s mess.

“It’ll be fine, right?”

There was no way a man of such high standing—someone who could afford a suite at the Praxis Hotel—would deign to become the mistress of someone as insignificant as a viscount’s wife.

So it would be fine. No, it had to be fine. Lily soothed her anxious heart as she descended the stairs. Though the hotel had an elevator, using it required calling a staff member, and she didn’t want to run into anyone else, so she chose the stairs instead.

Walking all the way down from the fifteenth floor took quite a while. Lily paused briefly to catch her breath, then gripped the door leading to the first-floor lobby and pulled it open with all her strength.

“Good morning, my lady.”

“Ah!”

The moment she opened the door, a man greeted her, startling Lily. Judging by his crisp uniform, he appeared to be a hotel employee.

“Are you checking out?”

“Oh, yes. I’m about to leave now.”

“Then I shall escort you by carriage.”

“By carriage?”

“Yes. It is my duty to safely convey a lady of your standing—our esteemed guest—to your destination.”

So even this service was offered, as befitting a premier hotel.

Lily inwardly marveled but also felt relieved. She’d been worrying over how to get back to Viscount Benjamin’s mansion, having no money to hire a shared carriage, so this timely service lifted a weight from her shoulders.

“Then may I trouble you for that?”

“Of course. Please follow me.”

The man courteously guided her all the way to the hotel’s rear entrance, where the carriage awaited. As Lily climbed aboard, receiving proper escort for the first time in ages, she let out an involuntary sigh at the softness cradling her hips.

“It really… feels wonderful.”

Truly, a premier hotel was in a class of its own.

“Where shall I take you, my lady?”

“…”

At the man’s question, Lily’s face—previously lost in admiring the carriage—froze solid. Her once-lively green eyes, now drained of vitality, stared down at the plush carpet lining the carriage floor.

There was only one possible destination, no need even to consider it: Viscount Benjamin’s mansion—the only place she could return to, and, ironically, the very place she most wanted to escape.

“My lady?”

When the man called her again, clearly prompting her to state her destination, Lily closed her eyes tightly, then opened them and looked toward the window connecting to the driver’s seat.

“To… Viscount Benjamin’s mansion.”

Harold, who’d returned to Duke Maximilian’s mansion on the horse Dillon had ridden, was immediately seized by the duchess the moment he entered the estate.

“What’s going on, Harold? The guest of honor vanished without warning in the middle of your celebration—do you have any idea how worried everyone was? And then you stayed out all night without even a word. I know you’re grown now, so staying out overnight is understandable, but at least you could have said where you were going.”

“I’m sorry, Mother. I ran into Liam and some old friends and had a drink. We were so happy to see each other that I lost track of myself and drank too much… I truly apologize.”

Faced with the duchess’s scolding, Harold laid out a string of crimson lies with an expression and tone that seemed genuinely repentant. Of course, he felt no twinge of guilt for throwing Liam under the carriage.

Duchess Maximilian placed a hand gently against her cheek and let out a quiet sigh.

“However happy you were to see old friends, it’s still inexcusable for the guest of honor to slip away during his own celebration…”

“Mother, I heard Father was looking for me.”

Seeing his mother showed no sign of ending her lecture anytime soon, Harold deftly shifted the topic.

“Oh dear, just look at me—my mind’s gone completely. Your father’s in the study. Come with me.”

The invitation to go together meant his mother was somehow involved in what his father wished to discuss.

That made Harold slightly uneasy. With a sinking feeling, he followed the duchess.

Arriving at Viscount Benjamin’s mansion in the carriage provided by the hotel, Lily stood before the front gate, gazing blankly at the estate.

I didn’t want to come back… yet here I am anyway.

There really was nowhere else to go. Knowing her ailing mother was inside, returning was the right thing to do—but that very truth felt so dreadful that Lily clenched her fists tightly.

After causing such a commotion before and now staying out all night, Samantha would surely be furious.

Frederick or Brian could vanish for days without anyone scolding them, yet the moment Lily returned even slightly late, Samantha would blaze with rage, accusing her of gallivanting about. No matter how reasonably Lily explained her reasons, Samantha never listened.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

Now that she’d actually stayed out overnight, Lily worried how Samantha would react. She just hoped Samantha wouldn’t bring up her mother. She could tolerate anything else, but insults toward her family were absolutely unforgivable.

“Young Lady?”

Since Lily stood rooted outside the mansion, staring blankly without entering, a guard on duty called out to her in confusion. Although servants kept asking if she was alright, to Lily it sounded like they were urging her to hurry inside.

Right. I have to go in. There’s no other choice.

Summoning nonexistent courage, Lily slowly lifted a foot. Each step felt like walking on thorns. Though the distance should have taken only five minutes, her reluctance made it stretch past fifteen.

Finally reaching the front of the mansion, Lily took a deep breath to steady her nerves and stepped inside.

“Welcome back, Young Lady. We’re relieved you’ve returned safely.”

“We were so worried when you didn’t come back all night—wondering if something had happened.”

The servants, who normally ignored whether she came or went and just went about their duties, were unusually welcoming today. Caught off guard by this unexpected hospitality, Lily looked around bewildered at the circle of servants surrounding her.

Then, noticing unfamiliar people huddled behind the staff, she tilted her head in confusion. They weren’t servants of Viscount Benjamin’s mansion.

“Who are those people?”

When Lily pointed toward them and asked, the servants exchanged uneasy glances and all fell silent at once. As they looked at one another, seemingly deciding who should speak, the maid who tended to Lily most often finally stepped forward.

“Well… they’re people Countess Valiman brought with her.”

Countess Valiman.

The very woman who, on the night Lily married Frederick, had taken her place in bed with the groom. Her presence here could only mean one thing—she’d come to sleep with Lily’s husband again.

“…”

Just thinking about it made Lily’s stomach churn with disgust. Though it was absurd for the woman to do such a thing in someone else’s home instead of a hotel, Lily wasn’t even angry—only resigned to the fact that Frederick was, as ever, being Frederick.

Though proper etiquette dictated that the lady of the house greet any guest who arrived, Lily had no intention of treating Countess Valiman as a guest.

More importantly, the true mistress of this mansion wasn’t Lily—it was Samantha. So Lily intended to ignore Countess Valiman altogether and head straight to her room to rest, but the maid blurted out urgently:

“C-Countess Valiman said she came specifically to see you, Young Lady.”

Lily, who’d been climbing the central staircase toward the second floor, froze mid-step. She turned her head slowly and stared at the maid.

“…She came to see me—not him?”

“Yes. Master is currently out.”

“Since you weren’t here either, Lady Samantha has been keeping the countess company in the drawing room.”

“So please hurry to the drawing room, Young Lady.”

The servants urged her one after another, like they were singing a roundelay. That alone spoke volumes about the ordeal Samantha was enduring.

After all, Samantha—born a commoner—would naturally struggle dealing with Countess Valiman, who’d been noble from birth. Lily couldn’t help but smile faintly as she imagined Samantha floundering.

Part of her wanted to leave Samantha to suffer a bit longer, and she had no desire whatsoever to meet Countess Valiman. So Lily stood perfectly still, staring toward the drawing room. When she refused to budge, the servants grew restless, shifting anxiously and stamping their feet.

“Young Lady…”

At their desperate calls, Lily turned back to look at them again. Though each wore a pleading expression, to Lily it all appeared as nauseating hypocrisy.

Where were these people when they’d brought her ice-cold wash water or deliberately tugged her hair painfully while brushing it? Now they dared expect her help—it was laughable.

Moreover, Countess Valiman’s unannounced, impromptu visit was deeply rude. Had it been anyone else, Lily might have excused it as an urgent matter, but given this was the very countess who’d spent Lily’s wedding night in passionate embrace with Frederick, she found it particularly grating.

For that same reason, she had no wish to meet Countess Valiman—but she couldn’t refuse. The countess held higher rank than Lily. If Lily hadn’t been home, she might have avoided it, but now that she was present, deliberately avoiding the meeting was impossible.

If only she’d known this would happen, she’d have lingered longer at the hotel instead of rushing back so foolishly.

Regretting her haste, Lily told the servants:

“My present appearance is far too shabby to receive a countess. I shall change clothes first and then go to meet her.”

“What? B-but won’t that make the countess wait too long…?”

“It can’t be helped. Had she made an appointment, I’d have prepared and waited accordingly. Since she didn’t, the countess will simply have to wait a little longer.”

This was her only way to give both Samantha and the countess a taste of trouble, so Lily dawdled as long as she possibly could.

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
