The carriage of Viscount Benjamin’s household, having departed from Earl Brayden’s Mansion, cut through the thick darkness and headed straight for the trading company operated by Frederick. Despite the late hour, the entire building was brightly lit.

“Welcome back, President.”

As Frederick stepped down from the carriage, Robert, who had been waiting at the entrance, bowed respectfully. Frederick acknowledged the greeting with a slight nod and immediately entered the building. His loyal aide, having confirmed that no one else remained in the carriage, followed closely behind his employer.

Though the lights shone as brightly as midday, not a single employee was in sight. Everyone had already finished work and gone home. Today had been especially quiet, so all tasks had been completed even before sunset.

Nonetheless, Frederick’s reason for returning to the company was simple: he didn’t want to go home. If he returned, he would have to endure Samantha’s tearful, hours-long lament about rescuing poor Brian as soon as possible—and naturally, he had no desire to face that.

Well, at least she seemed to have completely forgotten that thanks to him, Lily had left the mansion. It was fortunate, actually—if she’d started dragging Lily into it too, things would’ve been truly exhausting.

“Phew.”

Upon reaching his office, Frederick sat down still wearing his coat. As he removed his non-prescription glasses and set them on the desk, then rubbed his thoroughly exhausted face, Robert, who had followed him inside, asked with concern,

“Did Madam say she won’t be returning?”

That morning, Frederick, unable to stand by any longer while Lily remained away from home, had visited the sanatorium where Grace Benjamin was hospitalized, arriving just in time for visiting hours.

But no matter how long he waited, Lily never came. She had braved heavy rain and blizzards before to visit her ailing mother without fail, so her sudden absence was clearly strange.

“Shall I look into why Madam didn’t come?”

At Robert’s question, Frederick paused in thought for a moment, then shook his head.

“No. I’ll find out myself.”

He never imagined that “finding out himself” would mean going directly to Earl Brayden’s Mansion.
