Last night, before Harold returned to Duke Maximilian’s Mansion, the report he received from Dillon about Lily’s whereabouts contained no mention of the sanatorium incident.

There were usually two reasons why Dillon wouldn’t report something to Harold: either it was so trivial that reporting it was unnecessary, or Harold himself had told him not to report it.

However, what Lily had experienced at the sanatorium belonged to neither category. Yet, no matter how much Harold thought about it, there was only one possible reason why Dillon had remained silent and withheld the report.

Dillon Lamport was the culprit who had terrified Lily. That was surely why he couldn’t bring himself to report it to Harold.

“The coachman who claimed to be a witness—didn’t you ask him to say that on your behalf?”

Dillon silently nodded. His demeanor might have seemed resigned at first glance, but it wasn’t. His eyes, fixed on his superior, were utterly indifferent.

Seeing Dillon’s obvious refusal to admit fault, Harold chuckled softly and pressed the wooden practice sword a little closer to his neck.

Though it was only a training sword and couldn’t decapitate anyone, it could still break bones. Especially the neck—just a slightly harder strike could snap it, making it a vital, life-threatening spot.

Yet, even with the blade pressed against such a vulnerable place, Dillon didn’t so much as blink. Not because he wasn’t afraid of getting hit—but because he knew perfectly well Harold would never strike him. Breaking the wooden sword was likely Harold’s way of substituting for that.

After holding Dillon’s gaze as if engaged in a staring contest, Harold finally smirked and lowered the wooden sword.

“I always feel this way, but you understand me all too well—almost to the point of bad luck.”

Dillon stood up, brushing dust off his backside, and replied somewhat sullenly.

“Isn’t it the same for you, Chief? You already know exactly why I did that to the viscountess, which is why you’re letting me off with just this, isn’t it?”

Instead of answering, Harold tilted the corner of his lips and thrust the blunt wooden sword deep into Dillon’s shadow. Dillon winced as if he himself had been pierced and stepped back a pace.

“Just in case you don’t know, I was merely carrying out your orders faithfully. You told me to stop the viscountess from going out by any means necessary.”
