“More tricks again…? Is this really all they’ve got this time?”

Joo Hyuk said, looking at the written submissions and evidentiary documents sent from Taesung’s legal department.

Normally, staff would have wheeled in cart after cart of documents, but this time, everything fit into just a single envelope.

The sharply reduced volume made him uneasy instead, so he double-checked several times to confirm this was truly all there was.

Ra In felt similarly suspicious. After all, these weren’t the type of people who’d run out of evidence to submit. Suddenly, she recalled what Song Kang had said during the interrogation that day.

Right when he declared his innocence and expressed sincere intent to reveal the truth behind the case, Taesung’s legal department had abruptly changed its stance.

Whether his cooperation had genuinely reached the legal team or whether there was yet another hidden agenda remained to be seen—but for now, having significantly fewer documents to review was certainly welcome.

With such a manageable volume, there was no need even for a magnifying glass; he began carefully flipping through each page one by one. Yet the legal department’s argument hadn’t softened at all—in fact, it had become even more concise and forceful in asserting Song Kang’s guilt.

“Claiming innocence while expecting a guilty verdict… now they’re pushing for reduced sentencing….”

Ra In muttered quietly under her breath. Clearly, Taesung’s legal department was dead set on securing a real prison term for him.

“All this time, they dragged things out when it could’ve been settled with just this much?”

Joo Hyuk gestured toward the towering piles of printed documents filling the room, his voice tinged with frustration.

“If Director Na Song Gang is proven innocent, we’ll have to hold Taesung’s legal department accountable for obstructing the investigation.”

No matter how he looked at it, the defense team was infuriating—so much so that both Joo Hyuk and Ra In clenched their teeth in anger.

“Senior, I’ll send Director Na Song Gang’s handwriting for a detailed forensic analysis tomorrow.”

“Right. We’ve been too overwhelmed to get to it until now. Finally, we might actually start conducting a proper investigation.”

With the aggressive volume of submitted evidence reduced, this shift had finally occurred. Ra In slipped several pieces of evidentiary documents containing Song Kang’s handwriting into an envelope.

“Senior, shall I schedule Na Song Lim’s summons soon?”

Ra In had concluded that both Na Song Lim and Na Song Un couldn’t be entirely innocent, given the “Na Song–” signature.

“Yeah, go ahead. Na Song Lim and Na Song Un seem oddly quiet despite rumors swirling around them. The gossip circulating behind the scenes isn’t trivial—sure, it could just be market rumors, but as the saying goes, there’s no smoke without fire.”

Ra In nodded in agreement; Joo Hyuk’s assessment felt entirely correct.

“Or maybe they’ve just been covering things up effectively all this time.”

Ra In’s flatly delivered remark carried a sharp edge.

“The bribery and preferential treatment appear unrelated to Director Na Song Gang but seem deeply tied to these siblings.”

Still, speculation alone wouldn’t persuade the court—they had no choice but to summon them for questioning.

Ra In hoped that interrogating them one by one might finally yield something useful.

Hae In arrived at Song Kang’s office upon his summons, his expression visibly uncomfortable.

The legal department had just delivered two new reports, and materials unrelated to the documents Song Kang had approved and submitted as evidence had already been forwarded to the prosecutors.

Song Kang rose from his desk and walked steadily toward the sofa, then sat down.

“Sit.”

As soon as the words left his mouth, Hae In moved to sit beside him and handed over a document.

“What’s this?”

“It’s the materials submitted to the prosecution.”

Song Kang looked at him, slightly taken aback. He held no resentment toward Hae In for the legal department submitting different documents to the prosecutors—he hadn’t been unaware of it—but he hadn’t expected Hae In to personally bring him this confidential information from the legal department.

“It’s rather ironic that Taesung claims I have secrets… But why bring this to me?”

Hae In hesitated before answering Song Kang’s question.

“I told you I’d let you know if I found out anything important.”

“Is that all?”

Song Kang pressed further, still genuinely puzzled.

“Because you trusted me.”

The simplicity of the reply was almost suspicious in itself.

On the day Song Kang had ordered all materials brought to his office, if he’d taken only what he needed, Hae In would have been placed in an extremely difficult position.

The Head of Legal Affairs might have dragged Hae In’s desk into the hallway or punished him with all sorts of disadvantages to sideline him entirely.

Although that incident had been the catalyst, Hae In had already grown utterly weary of the Head of Legal Affairs’ pettiness. When Song Kang extended a hand, Hae In saw no reason to push it away.

He might not be the most righteous attorney, but he certainly didn’t want to help frame an innocent person.

“I’m not sure about ‘honest,’ but straightforward suits me just fine.”

Song Kang picked up the documents Hae In offered and began flipping through them page by page. Even for someone as well-versed in global economics and diverse fields as he was, legal matters remained a complex domain.

Moreover, the Head of Legal Affairs—crafty as a fox—had drafted the submissions in such privileged, jargon-laden language that even fellow legal professionals would struggle to interpret them without explanation.

“To be honest, I don’t fully understand it, but this doesn’t seem particularly favorable to my case.”

Even without legal expertise, he could sense the document’s unfavorable tone.

“So what’s the conclusion?”

“Reduced sentencing.”

Hae In now openly revealed the legal department’s hidden intentions. Song Kang paused, carefully considering.

What exactly was Geum Mo Ran trying to accomplish? Was she seriously attempting to place someone like Na Song Lim in his position? The very idea was laughable.

“Do you still not know who’s behind this?”

Song Kang asked, masking his true thoughts. Hae In lowered his gaze, pondering deeply. Unable to discern the answer himself, he spoke before Song Kang could wait any longer.

“To be honest, I don’t know that much myself.”

Hae In didn’t seem to be lying, so Song Kang nodded. He even felt a slight willingness to believe Hae In’s promise to inform him if he uncovered the mastermind.

“But, as you know, the prosecution has summoned Deputy General Manager Na Song Lim. Until recently, we all assumed the ‘Na Song–’ signature must be yours—you’re the second-in-command after the chairman, after all. Unfortunately, I hadn’t considered that possibility until now.”

Hae In sensed something but couldn’t disclose it to Song Kang without concrete evidence. Still, from Hae In’s hesitant expression, Song Kang grasped what he wanted to say.

“If you’ve got ideas, feel free to speak openly.”

Following that “speak openly” instruction too literally, however, might cost Hae In his job. Seeing Hae In torn between speaking and staying silent, Song Kang voiced the words Hae In couldn’t bring himself to say.

“It’s not Deputy General Manager Na Song Lim. And certainly not Director Na Song Un…”

Song Kang trailed off, having nothing more to add about the two. Hae In felt flustered, as if Song Kang could see right through him.

“They simply lack the capacity for something like this.”

It wasn’t defense—it was outright dismissal. Ra In didn’t strongly dispute Song Kang’s assessment; after all, everyone at Taesung knew what kind of freeloading good-for-nothings they were.

“Then who dared impersonate you to authorize such an enormous decision?”

Hae In asked Song Kang as if expecting an answer—surely he must already know.

“I’m not sure. I’m curious how the prosecution interprets this. They seem to understand I’m not the culprit—but how are they progressing with the real investigation…?”

Song Kang smoothly shifted the ball back to the prosecution.

“Shall I meet Prosecutor Choi Ju Hyuk? He’s a close senior of mine.”

“Afraid you can’t reach Prosecutor Jin Ra In? I heard she’s your senior, too.”

“Ah… yes… well, with her…”

Song Kang hadn’t seriously meant for Hae In to contact Prosecutor Jin Ra In.

“If this were something resolvable through personal connections, Prosecutor Choi Ju Hyuk would’ve contacted us the moment the legal department started submitting those documents.”

Hae In nodded in agreement with Song Kang’s reasoning.

“Instead, I plan to make a statement during the next summons. Prepare the evidence you’ll submit that day as well.”

He intended to cooperate fully with Prosecutor Jin Ra In’s investigation, just as she had requested.

“Yes…”

Hae In replied softly, his voice trailing off with a worried expression at Song Kang’s instruction.

“Is there a problem?”

“Oh, it’s just… the Head of Legal Affairs is on extremely high alert right now.”

Song Kang chuckled lightly at Hae In’s words—but his amusement quickly hardened into icy coldness.

“If the Head of Legal Affairs is on high alert, am I supposed to tiptoe around him?”

He had already been waiting for the right moment to get rid of the Head of Legal Affairs, so Hae In’s comment greatly irritated him.

Of course, his frustration wasn’t directed at Hae In—if he could have acted freely, he would have fired the man immediately. But Taesung, as a corporation, constantly weighed on his every word and action.

He knew even something as trivial as setting down a water glass reflected on the company’s image. How much more caution, then, was required when dismissing an employee of Taesung?

Moreover, the Head of Legal Affairs was precisely the kind of figure known for “talking a lot in these circles”—so rather than humiliatingly dismissing him outright, it might be wiser to exploit him strategically.

“Ah…! No, that’s not what I meant at all.”

Hae In flustered visibly, his shoulders jerking as he hurried to clarify.

“I know that’s not what you meant. I was just telling you not to worry.”

Song Kang hadn’t intended to frighten Hae In, yet unintentionally, that’s exactly how it turned out.

“I’d like you to help create favorable conditions for the prosecutors’ investigation. Focus solely on preparing the evidentiary materials for the next summons—don’t worry about anything else.”

“Yes.”

Hae In responded quickly, his entire body tense and rigid.

“Who’s accompanying Deputy General Manager Na Song Lim during the summons?”

“The Head of Legal Affairs will accompany him.”

“Perfect.”

Song Kang, too, hoped the summons of Song Lim might yield some crucial clues.

Afterward, the legal department kept delaying Song Lim’s summons with one excuse after another—yet for some reason, the investigation’s focus abruptly shifted back to Song Kang.

When scheming men desperately battle for her favor in the male harem

This one’s also on my reread list! The rivalry, scheming between the men in the imperial harem are just as intense and thrilling as in classic palace drama novels, where concubines fight to the death. Give it a read, girls! I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Synopsis:

“I am not worthy of her… but I still want to be by her side, even if only as a loyal dog…”

Those were the painful whispers of Yue Guanyi – the proud Crown Prince of the Great Qi, who was torn between deep love and a guilty conscience. Despite holding the supreme power of the Imperial Guard, he still could not forget the dark past when he was sold into a brothel.

Fate played a cruel twist when Qiu Shuzhi – a young female official who had just passed the imperial examinations with top honors – stepped into his life. She did not know that she was the one who had saved him from a tragic fate many years ago. And now, her heart was the target of pursuit for both Yue Guanyi and the powerful Empress Dowager Qin Qing.

While Yue Guanyi only dared to silently care for and protect the one he loved from afar, the  Empress Dowager Qin Qing openly expressed his feelings and did not hesitate to take advantage of his power to approach Qiu Shuzhi. The covert struggle between the two most powerful forces in the imperial court began…

Trigger warning: All men in this novel are yandere style.
