While waiting for the appointed time, Hae Yeon conducted an investigation at home—an activity that had now become part of her daily routine. Following the doctor’s advice from the daytime visit, she changed her search direction and managed to find something that bothered her.
Unfortunately, time ran out, so she wrapped things up for now and hurried out. Thanks to leaving a bit early, she arrived at the department store well ahead of her scheduled meeting with Do Hee.
Although it was a weekday evening, the department store was packed—it was simply that large and famous.

“What’s gotten into you, Unnie? Since when do you invite your little sister-in-law out for a splurge like this?”
Do Hee, the pampered daughter of a wealthy family, widened her eyes in astonishment. Hae Yeon laughed and walked side by side with her toward their reserved seats. Since Do Hee was slightly older, Hae Yeon linked arms with her—and to any onlooker, they looked exactly like real sisters.

“So, Unnie, how did things turn out! All Dad told me was that you started working—I was dying of curiosity!”
Do Hee, brimming with curiosity and bursting with questions, was utterly endearing—like an adorable puppy wagging its tail and begging for a treat. Looking at Do Hee’s lovable expression, Hae Yeon suddenly understood why Do Ha enjoyed teasing his wife so much.
“It just sort of happened. I got bored staying home all the time.”

Hae Yeon was deeply touched by Do Hee’s genuine happiness, as if it were her own achievement. It was a complete contrast to Chairwoman Yoon’s indirect “threats” or her father-in-law’s baseless outbursts of anger. Of course, her in-laws and Do Hee were incomparable to begin with.
“What about Mom? How did Mom react?”
You got scolded a lot, right? Knowing her mother’s temperament better than anyone, Do Hee added with a worried tone, chewing on her lips anxiously. Seeing such sincere concern, Hae Yeon’s heart warmed, and she smiled gently.
“She gave her permission.”
“Mom did?”
“Yes.”
Do Hee found it hard to accept Hae Yeon’s answer at face value. Her already large eyes grew even wider. Her mother would have naturally opposed Hae Yeon working—so hearing that permission had actually been granted felt nothing short of a revolution, making it hard to believe.
“How?”
“She didn’t say much—just gave her approval.”
Seeing Hae Yeon calmly smiling as if it were nothing, Do Hee felt a pang of sympathy and reached out to hold her hand. Though Hae Yeon spoke so casually, Do Hee could clearly imagine how her mother must have reacted.

Do Hee studied Hae Yeon anew. Her youthful, fresh face wore almost no makeup. Her clear, dark eyes gracefully curved into a gentle smile.

Hae Yeon chuckled softly. Because Do Hee was close to her, she had also become friends with Joo Ah. Pouting her plump lips, Do Hee continued.
“Anyway, Unnie, you’re amazing! Landing a job at such a big company! Joo Ah Unnie sure knows how to pick talent, huh?”
“I’m not so sure about that.”
Embarrassed, Hae Yeon responded with a smile—and Do Hee giggled along, “Hehe.” Their cheerful chatter settled somewhat once their ordered food arrived.
Finally thinking the moment was right, Hae Yeon decided to ask the question that had been weighing on her. Her heart pounded—asking like this, especially probing her beloved Miss, made her anxious.
“Miss… about last year.”
She started speaking, but her heart felt heavy. She’d suggested shopping today partly to apologize for not paying enough attention to Do Hee lately. But having to fish for information this way left an uncomfortable taste in her mouth.
She almost sighed but held it in. If there was ever a natural moment to ask, this chance meeting was it—so she forced a cheerful expression. In contrast, Do Hee’s face clearly showed surprise.

The pinstripe wide-leg pants and matching blazer Do Hee had picked out looked incredibly chic in both color and style.
Hae Yeon headed into the fitting room amid excessive praise from Do Hee and the store staff. Since her home wardrobe consisted almost entirely of skirt suits, wearing pants felt unfamiliar and strange.
“Ugh… this is so embarrassing.”
