“My portion is far too large. Because of me, the other knights won’t get to eat their fill. It’s fine if you take a little away.”

Chloe approached the knight distributing food and held out her untouched plate.

She had merely spoken indirectly, as nobles usually did, but inwardly she meant, “This is too much for me—please take some away.”

But unfortunately, the distributor happened to be a knight of common birth. He was accustomed enough to mingling with nobles not to feel awkward, yet not skilled enough to understand their subtle language.

Misinterpreting the Empress’s words as her willingness to forgo dinner for their sake, the knight replied with a cheerful smile.

“No, Your Majesty. We always eat plenty, so it’s quite all right. In fact, we’re more worried about you. We’ve heard you’ve been so busy with your lessons lately that you often skip meals. So if you’d just eat your fill today, even just for once, I and the other knights would be truly glad.”

The knight’s resolute attitude left her no room to retreat. Chloe, who had gotten her plate back unchanged, nodded absentmindedly.

Back at her seat, she stared blankly at the plate. The wild boar meat, golden-brown and perfectly roasted, looked truly appetizing. Its glistening sheen suggested it was rich with juices.

Yet, the portion was undeniably excessive.

Chloe swallowed hard. To emphasize once more, this was not an expression of craving.

She was afraid of the food set before her. The knights watching her with bright, expectant eyes only added to her discomfort.

She speared a thick chunk of meat with her fork and put it in her mouth. It tasted as wonderful as it looked.

With ambiguous feelings—half nervousness, half happiness—she began eating.

Before long, however, she reached her limit. She hadn’t even finished half the meat, yet her narrow stomach was already protesting in pain. For someone who disliked eating to fullness, this was already overindulgence.

Yet she couldn’t possibly leave all the food uneaten…
