Coon’s letter was concise.

It began with his recollection of their first meeting with Chloe, then described how he had lived after the war ended—details about his background that he hadn’t managed to explain during their initial conversation.

Nowhere in the continuous narrative was his personal information revealed. Chloe, who had secretly hoped to learn more about him, felt disappointed.

Chloe’s own identity had long since been fully exposed—so why was he still hiding his?

Someone who concealed their identity so thoroughly was usually one of three things: a bad person, an exceptionally capable one, or both.

Considering the effort it took to send the letter, he was probably the exceptionally capable type.

If there was an exceptionally capable man named Coon, only one person came to mind.

The current Emperor of the Empire.

But Chloe thought it impossible that her close friend could be the Emperor.

The Emperor of the Empire would never wander around a village in shabby attire, nor would he go around returning lost wallets.

Besides, Coon and the Emperor were far too different.

Both the Emperor Chloe had personally encountered and the one described in rumors were cold and ruthless individuals.

‘He’ll probably reveal his true identity once we’ve grown a bit closer.’

Pushing aside her disappointment, Chloe continued reading the letter. It had already reached its final page.

“Perhaps you’re wondering when we’ll meet again. I am as well.

It likely won’t take very long. I dare say this with certainty: we’ll meet soon, Chloe.

Until then, I wish you well.”

It was merely printed words—shorter than any book—and yet, could anything be this intriguing?

“If you would write a reply, I’d be deeply honored, Chloe.”

At the very bottom of the last page, a postscript had been added.

The handwriting couldn’t quite shed its elegance, yet it carried a hint of playfulness.

Chloe resolved that her reply must begin with, “Commencing this letter of honor.”

Following that was an explanation of how to send the letter.

“Just leave your reply where this letter was placed. There’s no strict deadline, so please write whenever it’s convenient for you.”

It wasn’t Chloe sending the letter; rather, Coon’s side would personally collect it.

To go through such a cumbersome procedure just to avoid revealing an address—by now, even Chloe, who hadn’t been particularly curious before, began wondering about his true identity.

‘…A wanted criminal?’

He had too much money but couldn’t reveal who he was. Someone vaguely came to mind.

This suspicion wasn’t entirely baseless.

Chloe decided she’d cautiously inquire about his identity when sending her reply.

The next day, Chloe sat at her desk immediately upon waking.

Since there was no fixed time to send the letter, she could do it anytime. Thus, she wanted to reply as soon as possible to receive his reply to her reply.

For Chloe, who had only ever written formal letters, exchanging letters with a close friend felt novel.

She shared bits of her own story here and there and wrote down her impressions after reading Coon’s account.

As she wrote about this and that, the letter grew noticeably long.

Feeling as if she alone was overly excited, Chloe became oddly embarrassed. So, before sealing the envelope, she removed a few pages. She’d send this part next time, if the opportunity arose.

After finishing the letter, she went downstairs to enjoy breakfast. Though the meal’s quality was markedly worse than yesterday’s, her satisfaction was higher than ever.

Curious whether the letter had been collected, Chloe returned to her room right after eating.

‘It’s gone!’

The letter she’d placed on the side table, following Coon’s instructions, had vanished completely.

Could Jane be involved in this letter exchange? Who on earth had taken it?

Curiosity stirred, but she decided to let it be.

Like magic, leaving a secret unexamined held its own charm.

“Why, Your Majesty, are you reading a letter addressed to you?”

Dylan, entering the sovereign’s office, couldn’t hide his astonishment.

The man sitting calmly in his chair was impressive enough—but to see him actually holding a letter in his hand?

Was this truly the same lord who used to dump entire stacks of letters onto Dylan, complaining how tiresome reading them was?

“Because I became interested.”

At those words, Dylan’s heart raced.

Excitement, joy, and pride quietly swelled within him.

Chapter 115 Chapter 114

At last, that man was taking an interest in diplomatic matters!

Overwhelmed with emotion, Dylan refrained from unleashing the bundle of nagging remarks he’d prepared on his way over.

That decision would become the third-best achievement of Dylan’s life.

Disturbing Coon’s intense focus—bordering on obsession—with the letter would have led to something unbearable.

‘To my beloved friend…’

Coon began rereading the letter from the very beginning, having studied it so thoroughly the paper was nearly worn through.

At the very top, in the sender’s section, she had addressed him as “my beloved friend.”

The strokes of the characters were broken in places, as if she’d hesitated repeatedly while writing—a tender clue only Coon could notice.

Below that lay her reply and the beginning of a new story from Chloe.

At the end, she subtly inquired about Coon’s background. Did she truly believe he’d answer? She was both naive and reckless.

“Then… may I hope for your reply? No—I’ll wait.”

Unlike the cheerful tone with which the letter began, this closing greeting carried a hint of tension.

The woman who once disliked her connection with Coon now welcomed it.

The sudden reversal of advantage was pleasing only for a moment. Abruptly, Coon’s emotions began to boil.

‘She shouldn’t give her affection so easily.’

Though she’d experienced countless relationships and should have grown indifferent, she was unexpectedly vulnerable to emotional bonds.

Might she give her heart just as easily to others?

Did she use that same sweet tone with those wretched rats?

From such trivial worries, Coon’s irritation began.

“Dylan.”

The negative emotion he’d expected to vanish quickly lingered, chasing him for a long while.

He finally called his personal problem-solver.

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

At the solemn-sounding summons from his sovereign, Dylan answered immediately—though, truthfully, he was slightly nervous.

“Why would someone who once distrusted me suddenly show me favor?”

“Pardon?”

“You disliked me before, but now you need me.”

Dylan was confused.

If this question followed reading the letter, shouldn’t it relate to the letter?

Yet this query seemed entirely unrelated to diplomatic affairs.

“Well… I suppose they must be someone who trusts people easily.”

Since he had to give an answer, Dylan replied.

At the conventional response, the other’s expression twisted—it wasn’t what he’d wanted to hear.

Startled, Dylan quickly corrected himself.

“…Let me rephrase. Perhaps they didn’t at first, but now they have no choice but to trust Your Majesty.”

“Me?”

“Yes. Once someone recognizes Your Majesty’s true worth, letting you go would be their loss—both materially and emotionally.”

Having delivered such a polished reply in a short time, Dylan tensed again. Would this answer finally satisfy him?

Soon, Coon nodded. His expression of understanding showed he was pleased with the response.

He’d clearly wanted to hear that others were drawn to him because of his excellence. He’d simply waited for Dylan to say the predetermined answer.

“Why worry about such things? Regardless of the truth or the other party’s thoughts, circumstances will unfold exactly as Your Majesty wishes.”

Worried Coon might ask another pointless question, Dylan drove the point home. Half of it was flattery to evade the situation; the other half was genuine.

No matter what hardship arose, Coon would obtain what he desired. And if it was something hard to grasp, he’d pursue it even more meticulously and skillfully.

A man who had already acquired everything he wanted. A man whose every grand plan had succeeded.

Not only was his ability outstanding, but his position was exceptional too—he already stood at the pinnacle of the world.

What could such a man possibly fail to accomplish?

‘Ah, right. He did fail in that war.’

Dylan, who’d been inwardly idolizing Coon, suddenly snapped to his senses.

Now that he thought about it, there remained the war with Ballont Kingdom—an affair so absurdly concluded it hardly counted as the man’s mistake.

The sole blemish among Coon’s brilliant achievements. Though it wasn’t even his doing, Dylan inexplicably felt wronged.

“…But, Your Majesty, may I ask just one thing this time? Why did you abandon the Ballont Kingdom?”

In that instant, the fingers tapping the table froze midair. Coon’s gaze, previously fixed on the letter, shifted to Dylan.

Oops.

Meeting those cold, red eyes, Dylan broke into a cold sweat.

To boldly display such an impertinent question!

Even someone who’d long stood by Coon’s side wouldn’t survive such an overstep. Dylan braced himself, tense, awaiting whatever punishment would come for crossing the line.

“I never abandoned it.”

Contrary to expectations, Coon answered calmly. His unexpected gentleness frightened Dylan even more.

Had His Majesty taken something strange?

“It’s simply that the target changed.”

“What do you mean…?”

“I’ve never failed to grasp what I desire. No matter how much time or effort it takes, my goal will inevitably end up in my hands.”

“…”

“That’s what I mean this time as well, Dylan.”

A gentle voice, yet an oppressive atmosphere.

‘I really have no idea what he’s talking about.’

He wanted to ask again, but feared he’d truly get scolded if he did.

In the end, he stayed silent.

“Dylan.”

Afterward, Coon called out to Dylan, who stood there dazed.

“…Yes. Yes.”

“Parchment.”

At Coon’s command to bring parchment, Dylan agreed and left the room.

‘But wait—why parchment all of a sudden?’

As he slowly headed toward the storeroom, Dylan grew suddenly curious.

The man who claimed there was no need for courtesy toward those beneath him—even replying on any scrap of paper—why was he now asking for fine parchment?

Just whose letter could he have received?

Male lead fell into her trap — and shattered when she walked away

This is also on my reread list!

This one is a slow burn, but when it burns, it burns hard.

Definitely worth a read, y’all!

The story follows a thousand-year-old seductive spirit who, on a bet, sets out to charm the male lead—a once-promising but unfortunate cultivator.

But just when she succeeds in making him fall for her, she heartlessly leaves, driving him to madness.

Determined to find her at all costs, he captures her, keeping her by his side no matter what, even if she hates him.

I love this kind of trope—I enjoy watching the male lead suffer in agony.

The ending drags a bit with unnecessary filler, but that’s fine.

As long as I enjoy the beginning, I’m good.
