Chloe stared silently ahead.

With such direct word choice, there was no way she could misunderstand his meaning now. Her calm gaze was thoroughly steeped in disbelief—a look that clearly asked, “What on earth are you talking about?”

Pretending ignorance, Coon pulled her into an embrace, and Chloe slipped right into his arms. Her frame was so delicate she barely reached halfway up his torso.

“I don’t want to lose you.”

He murmured this briefly afterward.

Only then did Chloe exhale sharply, as if realizing something. A short, choked groan rolled from the man’s throat.

Coon had finally figured out what had happened between Kalis and Chloe.

So much had occurred in such a short time that there was a great deal to handle. Rushed by time and living busily, they had naturally let slide the reason Chloe and Kalis had been together that day.

Since he hadn’t asked first, Chloe hadn’t felt the need to bring it up herself—mentioning it would only cause him anger and worry, after all.

But Coon was not one to simply forget and move on. She had forgotten how needlessly persistent and tenacious he became whenever Chloe’s affairs were concerned.

Kalis’s death and the danger to Chloe were separate matters. The culprit who had targeted Chloe from the beginning was someone else entirely; they had merely returned to square one.

“Chloe, if you become wholly mine, even those vermin will have no choice but to fall silent. Anyone from the imperial palace would surely hold back.”

Even though Chloe had taken the name Frihid, she was not entirely safe.

No matter how much the emperor favored and protected her, a consort was still just a consort. Being regarded merely as the emperor’s cherished plaything naturally meant she couldn’t truly protect what was hers.
