Adelheid froze the moment she stepped down the stairs.
Something enormous was crouching on the opposite shore of the lake, directly across from the priest’s residence where she stood.
Because it was a night lit brightly by moonlight, Adel could clearly see the creature’s form.
‘Good heavens….’
It was a dragon. Each of its outstretched wings alone seemed large enough to cover half the sanctuary, and the horns on its head were as grotesque as the demons described in scripture.
Its sharp claws and teeth were fearsome, and each scale covering its body was as large as a windowpane.
With every breath the creature drew in and exhaled, the air trembled with faint ripples.
‘Valentin?’
The dragon was in obvious agony. Though no sound escaped it, Adel felt as if she could distinctly hear its terrible screams.
Deep wounds covered its entire body, and thick, dark blood dripped steadily from them, staining the earth and the lake crimson.
The wing that had once seemed so mighty was now broken and twisted, dragging limply along the ground.
She had missed it earlier, too stunned by the overwhelming sight to notice.
But more than any of the wounds she witnessed, what truly tormented the dragon was the black aura clinging tightly to its entire body.
It was locked in a desperate struggle to tear that aura away from itself.
To human eyes, it looked like a viscous, black liquid, and no matter how many times the dragon raked at it with its sharp claws and teeth, it refused to come off.
