Without a word, Valentin rose to his feet, holding her tightly as he climbed the ruined temple’s steps.

The stairs were so steep that a misstep could easily injure him as well. Yet instead of setting her down, Valentin pulled her even closer.

“Are you worried I might hurt you?”

“Then conserve your strength. We don’t know how things might change.”

“Not at all. I could carry you with one hand.”
